ARIKI WINS AGAIN
FIRST IN KAWAU RACE AKARANA AND TAMAKI CLUBS The champion keel yacht Ariki added ! yet another win to her long series of i successes when she was placed first in the Akarana Yacht Club's cruising race j to Kawau on Saturday. The club also | held races to the Wade River for mul? ! let boats and V and S classes. A moderate to fresh north-eastei - i came down early in the afternoon and the boats hud a beat out of harbour I and in the channel and a lead to their ! respective destinations. Akarana, in conjunction with the j Tamaki Yacht Club, held harbour races I for all small craft, the boats starting oft' the new compass dolphin in Judge s Bay and finishing off Kohimarama i Wharf. The officials were:—Starter, Mr. WA. Wilkinson; timekeeper, harbour races, Mr. G. Miller; judge, Mr. H. Hill; judge, Wade races. Mr. A. Braund: timekeeper, Mr. J. Wheeler; judge, Kawau races, Mr. F. W. Jeffers; timekeeper, Mr. G. E. Laycock. CRUISING RACES A and B Classes.—All five starters ; crossed the line within halt' a minute |of each other. Nga-Toa led Ariki by a bowsprit. lorangi. Kotiri and Ladye Wilma were all handy. All boats worked into the North Shore for the beat out of the harbour. Ida was very late. Approaching the Saltworks beacon 1 lorangi and Ladye Wilma threw round and stood toward the Rangitoto shore. ; Ariki, which was well in the lead, also ! went about, but Nga-Toa carried on and lay through to Whangaparaoa. When the boats met there Ariki was | still in the lead and lorangi had worked her way into second place. NgaToa was third. Ladye Wilma fourth and Kotiri fifth. This order was kept for the remainder of the course, but when the Beehive was reached the boats almost lost the wind and slow progress was made to Momona Point, Kawau. The finishing times were:—Ariki (scr), 6.37.3; lorangi (3m), 6.55.39; NgaToa (9m), 6.56.34; Ladye Wilma (28m). .17.10; Kotiri (28m), 7.28.49. Result: Ariki, 1; Nga-Toa, 2; Ladye Wilma, 3. C and E Classes.—The third and fourth class keel yachts started in the following order: Speedwell, Naiad, Niobe. May belle, Mahoe and Wairiki. Finishing times were: Wairiki, 4.59.17; Speedwell, 5.1.31; Maybelle, 5.13.26; >*ahoe, 5.17.5; Naiad, 5.20.42; Niobe, 5.23.30. Result: Mahoe, 1; Speedwell. 2; Naiad, 3. H Class.—Starloch was in best position at gunfire, and led Celox. Awatere was at heel and Starlight fourth and last a few seconds later. The fleet followed the beat out of harbour as marked by the earlier classes. Finishing times were: Starloch, 4.50.40; Starlight, 4.51.42; Celox, 4.57; Awatere, 4.59.22. Result: Starloch, 3; Starlight, 2; Awatere, 3. L and N Classes.—There were nine starters. The boats got away in close formation. Lovelight, Wairere, Valeria, Winifred, Rakoa, Malua, Wayward, Mowai. Huia was three minutes late. . Finishing times were: L Class: Rakoa, 4.58.28; Valeria, 5.0.10; Lovelight, 6.7.9; Huia, 5.8.43; Malua, 5.9.25; Mowai, 5.12.20. Result: Huia, 1; Malua, 2; Rakoa, 3. N Class: Winifred, 5.3.46: Wairere, 5.7.40; Wayward, 5.10.T2. Result: Wayward, 1; Wairere, 2; Winifred, 3.
V and S Classes. —The combined race for 18 and 16-footers brought out nine boats, which made a good start in the following formation: Waitui, Scud, Wild Wave, Namu, Sea Sleigh. Secret, Cyclone. Mystic and Aratu. Finishing times were: V Class: Wild Wave, 5.2.20; Secret, 5.3; Scud, 5.5.28; Desdemona, 5.6.8; Mystic. 5.8.12. Result: Desdemona, 1; Scud, 2: Secret, 3. S Class: Namu, 5.4.17; Aratu, 5.4.30; Waituui, 5.11.50; Sea Sleigh, 5.15.43: Sceptre, 5.21.50; Cyclone, 5.23.38. Result: Waitui, 1; Aratu, 2; Namu. 3. HARBOUR RACE M Class.—Six patikis got away to a very close start. Maratea was first by a nose: then came Manene, Maroro, Maia, Mawhiti and Matarere. Finishing times were: Maratea, 4.7.6; Manene, 4.8.47; Maroro. 4.10.14; Matarere, 4.11.12; Mawhiti. 4.12.6. Maia pulled out. Result: Maratea, 3; Manene, 2; Maroro, 3. Z Class.—There were only three starters, which were Ace, Kitty and Delphine. Finishing times were: Delphine (scr. - ), 4.26.54; Ace (sm), 4.29.36: Kitty (4m). 4.30.25. Finishing times were: Shalimar, 4.27.7; Opah. 4.24.51; Val, 4.25.14; Joan, 4.28.26; Eleanor, 4.29.3; Ramona, 4.29.46; Marie, 4.31.54; Rangi, 4.38.24; Sea Dawn. 4.39.9; Valencia. 4.47.7. T, X and Y Classes. —An excellent start was made by the 12 competitors. The boats crossed in a bunch, led by Shalimar. Then came Val, Ramona, Kismet, Valencia, Rangi, Joan, Eleanor, Rona and Marie. Star Class.—June led the field of three by five seconds at the start. Moa was second and Ola third. The two first-named boats had changed crews and skippers for the day. Finishing times were:—Ola Iv., 4.00.4; June, 4.32.26: Moa. 4.38.44. The boats •were placed as they finished. MANUKAU YACHT CLUB YACHT AND LAUNCH RACES The Manukau Yacht and MotorBoat Club held a general handicap race for yachts and a cruising race for launches on Saturday.
