CHALLENGE ISSUED W.C.T.U. AND LICENSING POLL AWAKENING WAS WANTED “The result of the licensing- poll came as a challenge to .New Zealand and no one can say that a challenge was unnecessary.” This was the opinion of Airs T E Taylor, president of the W.C.T.U.. expressed at the annual conference of which organisation was continued in Wellington on Thursday and Friday. Airs. Taylor said that the results of the poll gave the impression that last year was one of failure, failure even to hold tv hat prevously had heen gained. To many the result meant a complete collapse of the faith that made for effort. Every union had come short of the best it was capable of, and the best hoped for. They could only turn for encouragement to what women all over the world were trying to accomplish and not worrying over their own isolated effort. Women in other- countries were setting an example, and New Zealand was failing to equal their efforts. Their task was colossal, but they had to face it. Airs. J. Cook, Auckland, and Airs. Hiett, Dunedin, thanked the president for her address. During Friday’s business, Airs. Perryman appealed for more prompt reports in connection with the “White Ribbon,” the organisation’s publicity organ. In a return of increases of membership, Canterbury South led with 105.
