ENGINEER FINED 125 According to Sergeant Cruickshank, Hugh Short, who was charged at the Onehunga Police Court to-day with being drunk while driving a motor-car. narrowly escaped striking several other motor-cars in Queen Street, Onehunga, at about 4.:10 p.m. on Saturday. In turning into the yard of the Prince Albert Hotel, he struck and smashed the gate-post. In driving out again his zig zag course took him in ) the other gate pobt. Mr. It. G. Sellars, who appeared for Short, said that his client, a motor engineer, had been badly gassed while on war service. and pleaded for leniency and suppression of his name. “We usually start from the scratch mark lu these cases,” said Mr. F. H. Hevien, S.M., "unless there are unusual circumstances. Anyone who drives a car while Intoxicated is deemed to be on scratch for the first event, v/it'a increasing penalties for subsequent offenders. A 3 the accused is in the motor business his licence will not be cancelled. He is convicted and fined £25.” The request for the suppression of Short’s name was not allowed.
