WORKING MODELS
Skill of Amateur Engineers N.Z. SOCIETY’S EXHIBITION Working and ornamental models showing evidence of remarkable skill and patience are being shown at the exhibition of the New Zealand Society of Model and Experimental Engineers in Browning and Ifwersen’s Buildings, Kingston Street. The exhibition was opened on Saturday evening by the Mayor, Mr. George Baildon, who congratulated the society on the comprehensive nature of the display. He commented on the far-reach-influence of well-chosen hobbies. Some of the best models are the work of men in professions and trades having no relation to engineering. A working model of a locomotive was made by an accountant. He obtained his details from a photograph, and yet it is correct in almost every particular. A model telescope is a fine piece of work done by a grocer interested in astronomy, who bought a second-hand lathe and made himself the telescope. A number of other locomotives are on exhibit as well as a number under construction arid display a remarkable devotion to detail. An outstanding working model is the work of an exGovernment man who has set himself the task of building the different model locomotives from the earliest times up to the present day. About 90 per cent, of the models can be classed as perfect. They range from small paper-weight castings to a beautiful yacht, the largest of the exhibits. Steam engines and a model traction engine call for attention amid a host of attractions.
The exhibition is open daily from, noon to 10 p.m. until next Saturday evening, and the models can be seen working.
