Sunday. 1 Prevented by the early closing of the ! ice in the Bay of Whales, Commander ißyrd's barque, the City of New York. | returned to Otago Harbour to-day, after an absence of 103 days. The \ vessel had experienced a stormy time i since she left for the Antarctic, and i had sailed nearly 4.500 miles. ! Captain F. C. Melville reported on ! arrival that the 20 men on board were :in splendid health. He also reported ' that every member of the expedition at I the base on the Barrier were in good I health and spirits. The passage of | over 2,000 miles to Port Chalmers i occupied 20 days 2 hours. The ship is | practically empty, with the exception of stores for the crew and about 45 tons of coal.
