PRACTICAL PATRIOTISM
NEW ZEALAND GENEROSITY The committee of the Navy League Overseas Relief Fund has again received a very large consignment of clothes from the ladies’ committee of the Wellington, Masterton, Auckland, and Canterbury branches (New Zealand) for the benefit of sailors’ children. The total number of garments received this year amounted to 1,340, which is a splendid example of the practical patriotism which exists in the British Dominions overseas (comments “The Navy,” the official organ of the Navy League). Many of the clothes were made by the children in the schools in New Zealand, and included in this years’ gift was an excellent selection of girls’ dresses, boys’ overcoats, jerseys, etc. The clothes were on view at 13 Victoria Street, London, before being distributed by members of the staff and several voluntary helpers. Parcels were sent to a number of families specially chosen from among cases dealt with by the fund, where it was known that gifts of this kind would be appreciated, and many letters of thanks have been received showing that this was indeed the case. The remaining clothes were sent to the sub-committees of the Navy League Overseas Relief Fund in Devonport, Chatham, and Portsmouth, and to the fund’s representatives in Liverpool and Stornoway. “The generosity of our New Zealand kinsmen and women is proverbial.” the paper goes on. “and it is needless to say with what gratitude the recent splendid offering from the several ladies’ committees referred to above has been received.”
