TROTTING

"ABAYDOS"

By

TROTTING AT OTAHUHU HORSES ON ACTIVE LIST | MAN-AT-ARMS GOES WELL Although there are not as many j horses being trained at Otahuhu i as formerly, the various mentors in that locality are at present busy preparing their candidates for forthcoming engagements, and when *’Abaydos” paid a visit to the suburban track during the . week a fair number were seen in action. Don Zolock is O.K. Geo. Pa ton is not giving Don Zolock I any exacting tasks, but the old trotter I is in rare health, and judging from his recent displays, he races best when i not tuned up too much on the tracks. | In Tip-top Form Ursuline is hitting out in her best ; style, and the other morning, ridden over a. mile course, the daughter of Our Thorpe reeled of£ the distance m smart time. If she would act. as well in her races, owner Paton would get a good price one of these tine days. At the Game Again Golden Stone, who a few seasons back was showing good promise on the track, but failed to reproduce it with the colours up, is again in work, tinder -Tom Koe. He was ridedn by Sir Matthews over a couple of circuits, and gave a pleasing display. Shaping Well Carnui, another of the Mangere trainer’s charges, is doing all that is asked of him in- approved style and it looks as If Tom Roe will get the El Carbine gelding in good shape lor some of the country fixtures. Knows His Business Sid Groat has a string of live in commission, and their general appearance is a tribute to the care and attention bestowed upon them. INo one has anything on Groat when it comes to putting the condition on horses, and if he had the goods to operate on, the patient and painstaking Otahuhu mentor would lead in several winners. A Nice Filly A. handsome filly is Queen’s Bond, a three-year-old daughter of Worthy Bond and Logan Queen. Geared up on Tuesday, she worked nicely, pacing in sweet fashion, and showing a fine turn of speed when asked for an effort over occasional quarters. Doing It Right Tony Victor, who looks none the worse for his speed test at Claudelands, is strutting about as vain as any peacock, and seems to realise that he did something out of the ordinary when he won the mile at Hamilton!! Tony has nothing to boast about over two miles, but for his mile effort he has been set a serious question in the Thames Cup. Ready for the Fray Profiteer appears to have taken a new lease of life, and paced freely unhoppled over sveral circuits, with Mick Groat in the sulky. Black Ballin infused a lot of dash into a mile and ahalf task, and is in fine shape for coming engagements. Silver Link is progressing favourably, and he may not be long in showing a return. The disappointing Laplander, who at times set the Mangere track on fire, has returned to his Canterbury home again. An impressive work-out was witnessed between Blair Audubon and the unraced handsome Man-o’-War colt Man-at-Arms. Blair was in his best form, hopping out like lightning, but he found the colt with him at every stride. The pace was on all the way, but when it came to the final furlong Man-at-Arms was playing with his older companion. Several good judges at Otahuhu expresesd the opinion to “Abaydos” that the four-year-old is the best seen out for many a long day. Alice Axworthy Resting S. August has Hori Dillon looking bright and perky and the big gelding is working as if he meant to be serious in future. Sparking Pronto is the latest addition to August’s stable, but her trainer will have his work cut out to get her to stay. The promising filly. Alice Axworthy, who was displaying a rare turn of speed again on the tracks, has developed leg trouble and is at present on the easy list.

In the Paddock Tom Grimmond has put Master Huia out of work, the gelding failing to come right again since his fall on the road some time back. This was a slice of bad luck for the young sportsman, as his charge looked like getting some money during the autumn racing.

Two Promising Trotters The unraced trotter, Nebraska, gave a bold display over several circuits without being asked to register anything in the way of time. The El Carbine gelding has a long sweeping stride and makes no attempt to leave his feet. The handsome two-year-old square-gaiter. Baby Triumph, kept the big fellow company for a couple of rounds and impressed greatly by her line style.

Improving Pacer The Papatoetoe trainer. Bob Hall, was also in attendance the other day at the Otahuhu track with Cold Treasure Lind Scandal. The former is well seasoned and displayed appreciable interest in his task. The brother to Gold Cast is on the improve and he should not be long in returning - his party some tangible token for their outlay. Still Going Strong Scandal is standing: up to his work in good style, and trainer Hall is rounding him into racing - shape. When right the Antonio gelding can muster up a hno turn of speed, and with the weight on top is always a sound proposition. On the Trail Again . .J. T. Paul is having a fairly quiet time on his private track at Mangere, L-)ut he has been kept busy during the season with his breeding proposition, Nelson Bingen. This took up a great deal of J.T.’s time, but he was able to keep his crackerjack two-year-old bv Guy Parish from Bertha Bell up to the mark, and the colt does his owner every credit. A couple of maidens are also receiving education at Paul’s hand. Walkali a has been resting for some time, but may be on deck in the winter. Jim also keeps an eye when required on Great Peter and Akenahi, while he will hold the ribbons when Peter Pirate goes to the races.
