Taupo Railway Held to be "Unjustified”
WORK TO CEASE GOVERNMENTS DECISION Press Association W ELLINGTON. Tuesday. Tho Cabinet decided to-day that th© construction, of the Rotorua-Taupo railway, which was put in hand by the lat© Government, will be definitely stopped as soon as the men employed there can be transferred, with their families, to similar work elsewhere. The Prime Minister, in making: the announcement, said: “Ministers cam© to the conclusion that the railway was quit© unjustified, and could not possibly be looked upon as likely to help in any interest contribution to the large cost of construction. This decision does not in any way imply that the Government will not help to effect land settlement on the pumice country in that locality. As a matter of fact, the Minister of Lands was authorised to take this branch of the matter in hand with a view to making portions of the land available for settlement, and to have a complete analysis of the land made by expert authorities. “Ministers who visited the locality are of opinion that motor services on a good road there will more than meet the whole of transport requirements in that area for many years to come.”
