Norman Pee (Mr. A. Moody) pleaded not guilty to using obscene language m a public place. Superintendent A. Ander, of the Otahuhu Fire Brigade, in evidence, said that the brigade answered a call to a fire at the back of the Council Chambers. After their arrival, he received complaints that the accused was interfering with the firemen in the execution of their duty, and he threatened, if there was any further trouble, to give him in charge. Fee swore at him in a loud voice’. There was a crowd of people present at the time. In answer to Mr. Moody, witness said that he did not report the matter to the police. James Viney, a member of the brigade, stated that he made a complaint to the superintendent of the accused interfering, and went with the superintendent when he spoke to Pee. He said that Fee did use the language complained of, and spoke in a loud and aggressive voice; there were quite a lot of people about at the time. He could not remember any of their names. He did not complain to the police.

The defence was a complete denial of the use of the alleged bad language, and three witnesses supposed Fee in his evidence. He said simply called Ander a liar and went away again. In i summing up, the magistrate said that he came to the conclusion that the evidence of the witnesses for the prosecution was the truth. People are entitled to use the public highways and public places without having their ears tinged with bad language. Pee was convicted and discharged. NEGLIGENT DRIVING Failing to keep to the left of centre line of the Great South Road cost Harold Purcell £2, and court costs 10s, and for driving a motor-car in a manner liable to be dangerous to the public, he was convicted, and ordered to pay costs, court fees amounting to £1 2s, and* witnesses’ expenses totalling £3 5s Sd. The prosecution was the result of a collision between defendant’s car and another car driven by Mrs. C. Thompson, of Papatoetoe. Mrs. Thompson stated that she was driving her car along Station Road, and intended to cross the Great South Road; when she got to the intersection she saw a car coming from Auckland, travelling very fast. She applied the brakes and her car stopped before she got on the concrete, but not before the oncoming car swerved, and hit her car, causing £l6 worth of damage. She asked the driver of the car to wait while she got the police, but on her return the car had disappeared. ON LICENSED PREMISES AFTER HOURS Many of the orthodox excuses were tendered by some of the defendants who were charged with being on licensed premises after hours. One attended to see his sister who was cook at the hotel, but forgot to mention that she had left that position some eighteen months ago; another just popped in to see the licensee, while another went so far as to own up to haying a squash and lemonade. Nevertheless, the nine defendants were fined £1 each, and ordered to nav 10« court costs. The accused were Norman f^.T en,^ Ht S a . Ce T ' Vi!liaJn Pepper.
