Manawatu Trots
GOOD SPORT PROMISED Cup Fixture at Ashhurst THE Manawatu Trotting- Club, which caters annually for the light-harness sport in its district, will hold the usual one-day fixture at Ashhurst to-morrow, when, judging by the splendid acceptances received, the function should be a pronounced success.
"DEIN'G the centre of a large district 13 and handy of access to many provinces where the trotting sport holds sway, the enthusiasts of the Manawatu Club have endeavoured for some considerable time to create an interest in the popular pastime, with a fair amount of success. The first fixture dof importance was held in 1915. when the Hastings owner J. H. Lloyd won the main event with Ngaraima. who has since produced two good ones. The Shrew and Raima. The former, in 1927, followed the lead of her dam and annexed the Cup in -1.39 3-5. establishing a record for the race. Mr. Lloyd also led in the winner of the big heat in 1918. when the fixture was held in December, Hal Junior being the winner, and when the next cup was decided in the autumn of 1920. Master Hal secured the stake for the Hawke’s Bay enthusiast. In 1917 Mr. E. H. Cucksev, now the popular mine-host of the Prince Arthur Hotel, and owner of Evelyn Locanda, had his name placed on the merit board through the agency of St. Leo. and in 1921 Bert Adams was successful with William the First. The following year Prinzora gave J. Shaw a winning drive, and the next cup saw the Auckland reinsman Jimmy Lynch score with Coal Light. That good mare Sea Pearl captured the big event in 1926 and last year W. J. Tomkinson landed the prize with Shadowland, who equalled The Shrew’s time. 4.39 3-5.
In to-morrow’s contest High Sea and Wakefield are the only two that took part in last year’s race, but the event lias drawn some promising pacers, including Enawah, Tamatakura, Logan’s Pride, Rich ore. Zella, Krina, Lottie Advance and Carmel, and the trotter Tiger Salve has been encouraged by the liandicapper to take his place in the field. It was at tills meeting last March where The Abbey attracted attention by winning a double for Bert Adams and the son of Gold Bell has since made splendid progress, winning good races for J. S. Sliaw and W. Clifton. "Abaydos’’ appends a review of the fields. Ladies’ Bracelet There are several unknown quantities on the front of this event, but unless there is some “rod in pickle,” it is fairly safe to assume that the result will be confined to those who have something to recommend them. Bell o’ Mine and Nelsonian are useful performers, Hardy Jack is on the improve, while Huia Maid last autumn was showing signs of making good. Then close to the front lot is the improving Ambleside, who only requires to repeat Wellington form to be in a place. Gang Awa’ is another improver that will claim attention. Drift Wave and Electric Gold are handily placed, but when it comes to finalising form the selection will probably be Ambleside and Gang Awa*. Linton Handicap There is nothing startling or outstanding in the field engaged in this heat and although the back marker is giving away a big start in 12 furlongs, the task is not an impossible one. Of the front-liners, May Reta, if she would go solidly, would be a good investment, but last season she did not do any good. Bessie Bingen, a member of the Great Bingen—Peter Bingen family, is well spoken of, and being
QUEEN ELIZABETH under “Skipper” Price’s care should command respect. Pilot won at Christmas and may be more reliable than the rest. On the next mark is Bingen Spiers, who has yet to make good, and Rangitero, a solid sort who will take a lot of beating. Alton Brook will be in the picture and Brian Bingen may be the best of the others. Favourites will probably be Rangitero and Pilot. Stewards’ Handicap A fair lot will contest this two-mile heat, but some of the runners have no Qualifications over the journey, although they may have improved in this direction. Ngahuia is a likely sort, but may prefer the shorter distance of the Pohangina Handicap. Gang Awa’ may not be seasoned enough to see it out. and Richmond Lass and Hilltop will probably require a race. Lady Jewel has yet to prove her ability over two miles, but Bonniewah is one likely to hang on well. The next lot are proved stayers and it is possible; the winner will come from this brigade. Crusader is
an old campaigner, and School Mate u on the up-grade. Fair Rid is a f lir ! sort, and Sailor Boy and Great I> : light have shown term at the distance 1 Bonniewah is reserved for a i aTo _ ! heat Sailor Boy and Great De’.nU* ; should be the elect. 8 t Manawatu Cup Thirteen is the number carded forts i chief event, with seven on the limit i n eluding some that have yet to prove | their worth over two miles. Enawah is a promising sort and her private | reputation will cause her to have a lot of friends. Kevinbrae has won at th#' distance, but is not too reliable, w Tamatilklira is a possibility and hails from a stable where they are specially prepared for such a journey. RiehorV | can if he is in the humour, while
Logan’s Pride is one that might prove a stumbling block to the best of them. Zella is at the top of her form and will be hard to dispose of. If High Sea is ready for the fray, he will be tough. His Wanganui Cup win was impressive. Krina is another with more than a rough chancb, and Lottie Advance alwoys runs a good race at the distance Carmel is a real horse, but he is set a stiff task early in his career, and Tiger Salve is on a good mark. The solid trotter will not have the services of C. G. Lee and may not do his best for owner Richards. When it comes to solid betting the public may go for Zella and High Sea. Longburn Handicap
The majority of those in this event will be seen out earlier and their form in previous races will thf-ow further light on their prospects. Trumpeter is well placed here and if W. Orange has him right he will prove a tough proposition. El Direct, a dual winner at Carterton, is sure to be in demand, and Jasper, if he produces his best effort, cannot be overlooked. Fliton is a useful customer that will have a good chance in the company, but in looking for favourites, the public may decide on El Direct and Jasper. Pohangina Handicap
This heat is run over 13 furlongs, and those who have stamina on their side will attract most attention. If Ambleside escapes a penalty earlier in tlie day, he will be in great demand, and Ngahuia will also come in for good support. Valamont is a distinct possibility, and Bonniewah, if reserved, is sure to fie one of the hardest to dispose of. Sailor Boy, Great Delight. Fair Lad and School Mate are a solid quartette, but one of them may gain h penalty for an earlier excursion. Old Speculator is again on the scene, but Carmel should hold him safe, and if this is the Aucklander’s mission lie will be handy at the finish. Ambleside nnd Bonniewah will probably be the elect, but in the absence of either Carmel will find favour. Palmerston North Handicap The square-gaiters will again have their turn in this item and backers will get a good guide as to their possibilities after the contest for the Linton Handicap. Alton Brook can get the journey and so can Rangitero, who, if he escapes a re-handicap, will have the best following. Nelson’s Request is steady and this will be in his favour, and then there is Laurier and Peter Eyre, two experienced trotters who have not been much in the limelight for some time. If back to form they should malathings interesting. Wild Lad would only require to something near his old form to sicken the opposition, while Some Jazz is not by any means out of the chase. The elect, however, may be Altonbrook and Rangitero. President’s Handicap The final heat of the day will give speculators something to think seriously about, as there are som p smart performers engaged. Nine of the 13 acceptors figure on the front line, and it is more than likely the place-getters are concealed hereEnawah, if in the humour, will go » merry 10 furlongs, while Cora Tacks will be quite at home over this journey. Logan’s Pride is a capable customer. Lady Jewel is speedy, and the Corrigan bracket Richore and Queen Elizabeth will be in demand. The latter is on the up grade and her recent form was quite good. Zella is handily placed, but may have her mark altered, and Carmel, from the back, will be knocking at the finish. If Enawah starts shr will dispute favouritism with the Queen Elizabeth bracket, failing which Cora Tacks will be in the rush.
