SCHOOL ATTENDANCE

DECREASE AT THAMES EFFECT OF UNEMPLOYMENT (From Our Ou:n Correspondent) THAMES, To-day. There is every likelihood of the Thames South School (Parawai) and the Xortli School (Tararu) being dropped a grade owing to the decline in attendance. This question was discussed at the School Committee meeting on Thursday. Tho chairman. Mr. J. Hodge, stated it was necessary that the attendance should be 320 in order for the schools to retain their grade. With a roll number of 330 apiece the schools in question could not possibly maintain that average. The position was that the schools would each lost a firstgrade teached. The secretary, Mr. P. L». Jenkins, pointed out that families were leaving the town in search of work. As far as he could see there was no remedy save more employment. A suggestion that the Tararu School be run as a side school to Thames Central and the Kaueranga School with Thames South was discussed. Under the proposed system the average attendance would be maintained. It was resolved to ask the chairman of the Education Board to bring the board’s advisory inspector with him on his next visit to Thames, and to confer with the committee as to the best course to pursue.
