BIG RIFLE MEETING

KING’S PRIZE CONTEST MELBOURNE MAN WINS N.Z. MAN HAS BAD LUCK (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) MELBOURNE, Friday. In the final stage of the shooting .for the King’s Prize, 10 shots at 600, 800, and 900 yards, the early shooters had an advantage. By three o’clock the wind was strong and bumpy, making it a real test of markmanship.

After the 600yds shooting Palmer, Little and Ewart (Victoria) lead with scores of 236. James (New Zealand) was 10tli with 232. No other New Zealanders were in the first 28.

At 800yds New Zealanders showed prominence, W. Feast doing well with

I 46. which placed him four points ahead of his nearest rival. At the time of the conclusion of the 800yds Feast was top with 280. Palmer (Victoria') was 280. James (New Zealand - ) was third with 275. Clarke (Victoria') was fourth with 277. Boon tenth with 276, G. Mayhew (Victoria) 18th with 274.

At 900yds New South and New Zealand struck disaster. Feast, who had shot with great consistency, and was in front, cracked hopelessly with 16. He went down in a particularly fierce squall. The vagaries of the wind can be estimated from the fact that he grot his first bull with 32 degrees of windage. Numerous shooters got the signal “clear target.” James could only j manage to score 37, making his total 315. G. Mayhew (Fitzroy, Melbourne). | won the King’s Prize for the aggregate j score. Mitchell, a brilliant young ; South Melbourne marksman, got an aggregate of 321, but he had only entered in the C and C series of the King’s Prize. Final details of all the scores of the competitors will not be available until to-morrow.
