100 PERSONS KILLED
MADEIRA LANDSLIDE A DREADFUL DISASTER (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) LONDON, Friday. A message from Funchal, he capital of Madeira, says sudden torrential rains caused a landslide. The noise was like that of an earthquake. Many houses were completely overwhelmed, and 100 persons were buried under thousands of tons of rock and earth. One family of six persons disappeared. Scores of cattle were swept away. The scene of the disaster was Sao Vincente, a town II miles north-west of Funchal. In a message from Funchal the correspondent of “The Times” says that after a prolonged drought torrential rains fell. The Inaldn River at Sao Vincente rose rapidly, and eroded its banks. The inhabitants of the village of Rosario fled uphill, in panic, driving their cattle before them. Suddenly they were overwhelmed by landslides and enormous boulders.
Many of them v,ere swept back to the river and carried to sea. Others were buried. The landslides continued for hours. A number of rescuers, including firemen and ambiance men. were buried. Several bodies were recovered at the bar at the river’s mouth, and others in the river near Rocario.
