SUMMER HINTS

Summer spinach is not easily grown in hot summer and in light soils, but an excellent substitute is spinach beet. Sow seeds now. Lawn mowings can be made to serve a good purpose by spreading them over the roots of those plants which need mulching at this season. Plants which continue blooming through the summer need looking over frequently for the purpose of removing faded flowers. If this is neglected. and seed-pods develop, blooming will soon cease. Climbers growing against walls need frequent examinations to see if water is needed, even in stormy weather. The soil in such positions is often poor, so that liquid manure w’ill always be beneficial to such plants.
