Crushed by Wheel of Five-Ton Truck

BOY OF 14 KILLED lift ends in tragedy Crushed beneath a rear wheel of a five-ton motor-lorry shortly after 8 o’clock this morninq, Alec Hamilton, a 14-year-old boy who lived at 32 Randolph Street, Newton, died in the Auckland Hospital at 11.15 a.m.

A lorry owned by W. Lovett, a, Ponsonby carrier, and driven by Edward James Benjamin, was coming down Pitt Street from Karangahape Road shortly uftcr 8 o’clock, when the boy asked the driver for a lift. This was granted and when the lorry reached the corner of Hobson and Victoria Streets, opposite the Manchester Unity Hall, the boy said he would get off.

The driver told him to wait till he drew up, but the lad, in attempting to step to the ground, half turned and slipped off the step under the rear wheel.

As there was no running board to throw him clear he fell directly beneath the wheel, one of the big, double, sold wheels passing over him and inflicting severe internal injuries. The truck was moving slowly at the time.

The* boy was taken to the hospital by the ambulance, but died at 11.15 a.m.
