CRUISING CLUB REGATTA

VICTORIA’S DAY OUT

SMALL BOATS IN ACTION Good entries., a spanking breeze and keenness on the part of competitors, combined tc t, ? e annual regatta of the Victoria Cruising Club, held off St. Marys Bay on Saturday, an outstanding success. The smaller boats had a merry time in the fresh sou’-wester, and the 14footer Maybelle capsized. A number of the boats found things a little too brisk and retired. The racing officials were:—Starter and judge, Mr. O. Johnson; timekeepers, Messrs. A. Perkins and H. Crowl DETAILS OF RACING Launches. —Bluewing was first away and was eloselv followed by Irene, Rosalie and Areta. Young Zealandia was 45s and Manarere lm 20s late. Bluewing soon drew away from the others and was never headed. Irene and Rosalie made a very close race of it right round the course, the former beating her rival in by 19s. Finishing times were: Bluewing, 2.50.45; Irene, 2.56.26; Rosalie, 2.56.45; Areta, 3.4.24; Manarere, 3.10.23; Young Zealandia, 3.23.45. Result: Bluewing, 1; Areta, 2: Rosalie, 3. Keel Yachts.—Wairiki, Owhanga ami Queenie started in the race for keel yachts. Owhanga and Wairiki got away at 2.40, but Queenie was 7m 40s late. Owhanga led until reaching the western tide deflector, where Wairiki took the lead and was never headed. Finishing times were:—Wairiki, 4.24.12: Owhanga, 4.34.59: Queenie, 4.36.56. Result: Wairiki, 1; Owhanga, 2. H and I Classes.—Celox crossed the line first, and next came Spray, Awatere, Starloeh, Starlight, If Not arud Why Not in that order. Spinnakers were set for the run down the harbour, and below King’s Wharf Starlight replaced Celox. When holding a good position Starlight carried away her throat halliards and dropped astern, finally giving up. On the beat up the harbour coming in from the White Light Celox was leading Starloch, but when approaching the flagship Starloeh was passed by Awatere. Finishing times were:—Celox, 4.43.58; Awatere, 4.44.55: Starloeh. 4.46.34; Tf Not,

5.22.44. Spray, Starlight and Why Not did not finish. Result: Awatere* 1; Celox

L Class.—The starters were Rakoa, Valeria, Mowai, Kokiri and Malua, in the order named. Rakoa and Valeria drew away from the others, and a close race between the leaders saw Rakoa having a slight advantage over Valeria round the course. Finishing times were:—Rakoa, 4.57.20; Valeria, 4.57.25; Kokiri, 5.2.11; Mowai and Malua gave up. Result; Rakoa, 1; Valeria, 2.

N Class.—Wairere was first to cross the line, with Winifred close on her stern, Matariki and Wyoming being a little distance further away. Winifred took the lead early in the race, and although she met with a mishap, she finished first. Finishing times were:—Winifred, 5.13.31; Wairere, 5.14.53; Matariki, 5.19.29. Wyoming did not finish. Result:—Matariki, 1; Wairere, 2.

V Class. —Ngaire led the way over the line, and was closely followed by Drone, Desdemona, Rita, Scud and Wild Wave. Secret was lm late. Drone soon overhauled Ngaire, and once in the lead was never headed. Passing the flagship on the completion of the first round she was 3m 58s ahead of Wild Wave, and further improved her position in the second round. The finishing times were:—Drone, 5.4.10; Wild Wave, 5.12.16; Secret, 5.17.10; Rita, 5.17.20;- Ngaire, 5.18.40; Desdemona, 5.21.42. Scud did not finish. Result:— Rita, 1; Drone, 2; Wild Wave, 3.

S Class.—A good field of 12 got away in the following order;—Mistral, closely followed by Atangatai, Tulip, Spindrift, Namu, Cyclone, Aratu, Swiftsure and Almira. Lancia was 3m and Sea Sleigh 64m late. Mistral led on the run down the harbour, and also on the beat across to Northcote. About half-way to the Watchman, however, Namu passed Mistral, and on the completion of the first round she was leading the. scratch boat by lm 20s. Tulip was third boat, Aratu fourth, Waitui fifth and Cyclone sixth. Namu was still in the lead when Northcote Point was passcid, but Mistral, working the southern side of the harbour got a nice luff and regained the lead. Finishing times were:—Mistral, 4.45.47; Namu, 4.47.5; Aratu, 4.50.15; Waitui, 4.53.44; Spindrift, 4.57.23; Cyclone, 4.09.27; Swiftsure, 5.3.8; Almira, 5.3.27. Aratu, Lancia, Sea Sleigh, Atangatai and Tulip did not finish. Result:—Waitui, 1; Namu, 2; Swiftsure, 3.

T and X Classes.—The order of startle was:—Ramona, with Shalimar, Joan, Meteor, Ola 111., Janet, Rangi, Marie and Manu all handy. Eleanor was 2m and Maybelle 3m late. Ramona, Shalimar and Joan drew away from the others on the lead across and up the harbour. Ramona was first round the Watchman, with Joan second and Janet, which meanwhile passed Shalimar, third. Oh the lead across the harbour for the second time- Maybelle capsized. Joan was gradually picking up Ramona and finally passed her, while Shalimar was overtaken by Meteor. Finishing times were: V3' n > 4.57.23; Ramona, 4.58.59; Meteor. 0.0.-7; Janet, 5.0.54; Eleanor, 5.5.54; j®* 12.5; Marie, 5.12.11; Manu, 0.12.58. Shalimar and Ola 111 did not finish. Result:—Janet, 1; Meteor. 2; Joan, 3. ’

Y Class.—This event also produced a good start. Jupiter got the best of it, and next to her came Sea King, Romp, Opah, Fay, Caprice IT, Bronzewing and Sea Rover. Sea Dawn was 21m and lead, followed by Romp, .the former be- . ni ahead of Romp on the completion of the first round. Fay was third Dawn fourth. i n the second lound Bronzewing passed Fay. RACE FOR M CLASS

EVENT AT DEVONPORT

A special race for M class patikis was conducted by the Devonport Yacht Club on Saturday afternoon. The race was started off the Devonport Wharf at 2.45. rhe starters were:—Maratea, Maroro. Matarere, Maia, Mawhiti and Manene the boats crosing the line in the order named.

On the lead to the Bastion Maratea improved her position, Manene drew level with the others, Maratea maintained her position on the beat back from the white light buoy, but Maroro was overhauled, by both Manene and Mawhiti.

The finishing times were: Maratea, 4.9.50; Manene, 4.11.30; Mawhiti, 4.14; Maroro, 4.14.10; Matarere and Maia gave whiti R 3 SUIt: Maratea ’ 1; Manene, 2; Ma-

OUTBOARD RACES POSTPONED

Owing to a high wind and chonpy water the New Zealand Outboard Motor-boat Association was forced to postpone a comprehensive programme of races which were to have been held at Buckland’s Beach on Saturday. liileven boats turned up at the course, but any attempt at speed was impossible.

It was decided to postpone the meeting until next Saturday provided the date does not clash with other fixtures.

NEW LYNN GUN CLUB

Following are the results of the New Lynn Gun Club’s shoot on Saturday: No. 1 Shoot, 7 bird?, for Murrell Cup aggregate.—L. Ramsay, 12yds, J. Pekin. 13yds, R. H. Bartley, 11yds, all tied with possible.

No. 2 Shoot, 15 birds, for Hazard trophy.—H. E. Knight, 14yds, M. Delich, 14yds, tied with 12 birds each. In the shoot-off Knight Avon on the 19th bird.

The next shoot will be held on February 23.
