CHEAP RADIO LICENSES

BRITAIN LEADS WORLD NATIONS’ FEES COMPARED (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) (United Service) LONDON, Saturday. Tho suggestion that the fee for a wireless licence, at present 10s a year, should be reduced has prompted the Postmaster - General, Sir William Mstchell-Thomson, to say that three days’ programmes for one penny does not make the charge unreasonable. Britain is cheaper than any other place in the world where a fee is charged. For instance in South Africa the fee is 35s a year, and for hotels and clubs 755; in Czechoslovakia, 225; Denmark, 20s; Germany, 245; Hungary, 12s, and Iceland. 60s. In France Holland no fees are charged.

A reduction is contemplated in Iceland owing to the scarcity of listeners. The fee in Italy is 15s a year; Sweden, 11s; Switzerland, 12s; Turkey, 60s plus 25 per cerU. tax on sets. In Austria the charge is 14d a month for listeners with salaries of less than £I.OOO a year, and 4s a month for those with more than that sum.

In Russia private listening is not encouraged. The Soviet prefer communal listening by means of loudspeakers in central parts.
