BATTERY HOUSE FIRE
OUTBREAK AT THAMES OLD KAURI BUILDING (From Our Own Correspondent.) THAMES, Sunday. The large wooden building near the Thames Wharf, and known as the Moanataiari Battery "Works, had a fortunate escape from complete destruction by fire at 9.30 on Saturday evening. The fire had a good hold when discovered and lit up the hills nearby. The brigade was quickly on the scene, and though hampered by want of more leads, got the blaze under after thirty minutes’ work. The night was calm, and had there been a wind, nothing could have saved the building, which is over sixty years old. The fire was confined to the wing where the smoke-stack stands, and apparently broke out in the smeltingroom. Outwardly there is not much damage, but the interior of the wing is burned out. The building and plant is insured for £5,000 with the National Insurance Company. The battery building was built in kauri at a cost of £32.000 in the old gold rush days.
