EXCITING CHASE
JOYRIDE INTERRUPTED
GAOL FOR THREE MONTHS Following an exciting chase through Epsom and Remuera, after Mr. G. Shipherd had seen a youth driving his car which had been taken from outside the Newmarket station, Thomas John Stanaway appeared at the Police Court this morning charged with converting the car to his own use. Mr. Shipherd left his car outside the Newmarket station, and after 10 minutes’ absence found iif) had been removed. He reported the occurrence to the Newmarket police and caught a tram to go home. Near the Bosom depot Mr. Shipherd saw his car being driven back toward Newmanvei. leapt from the car, and enlisting the aid of a passing motorist, gave i-nase along Munukau Road and Market Road to Remuera. At the intersection ot Remuera Road, the fleeing motorist was forced to give way to a tram. Mr. Shiplierd ran forward, jumped on the running-board, and overpowered the youthful driver, whom lie took to the Newmarket police station. This morning. Stanaway, a motordriver, aged 20, pleaded guilty to converting a car valued at £ 4uo to his own use. “He lias been previously convicted on a similar charge,” commented Senior-Sergeant O’Grady. Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M.: I see lie got three months then; it does not seem to have been much of a deterrent. . Sentence of three months’ imprisonment was imposed.
