Waikato Club’s Summer Card

SATURDAY MARCH 2 A popular light-harness fixture with lovers of the pastime in the Auckland Province is the summer function of the Waikato Club, which is set down for decision on Saturday, March 2, on the fine Claudelands course. Following right on the heels of the Otahuhu carnival this year, the Hamilton fixture should attract a good number of visiting horses and there is every reason to anticipate a large entry list next week. The class will also be of a favourable standard, the programme having been arranged to attract trotters and pacers of improved calibre in the main items. The prize money is again allocated on a liberal scale. Many novices, however, will not be prepared to tackle the 3.37 mile and a-half improvers’ race, with the more elastic limit of 3.43 i following at the Thames meeting. There will, however. be a big contingent of pacers available who have passed the introductory stage. The 4.44 two-mile Raglan Handicap, with its prize of £l5O, does not threaten to be as keenly sought after as would have been the case with an extended limit, as owners with horses j of a 4.46 to 4.50 degree, will prefer to j wait for the Parawai Handicap (4.50) at the following fixture. As usual, the cup is well endowed and horses taking part in this event can have another chance in the Waipa mile. The Farewell will appeal to the improving class, while squaregaiters have ample opportunity in the mile and a-half and two-mile events for trotters, and also in the Dominion Handicap for unhoppled horses. Appended is a summary of the card: Improvers’ Handicap, of £l2O (trotters only); one and a-half miles; limit, 3.50. Progressive Handicap, of £160; one and a-half miles; limit, 3.37. Waikato Trotting Cup. of £475 and gold cup; two miles: limit, 4.36. Members’ Handicap, of £225 (trotters only); two miles: limit, 4.46. Raglan Handicap, of £lo0; two miles; limit, 4.44. Waipa Handicap, of £240; one mile; limit, 2.18. Dominion Handicap, of £l7O (unhoppled horses only); two miles; limit, 4.50. Farewell Handicap, of £180: one and a-quarter miles; limit, 2.57. ENTRIES ON FRIDAY Nominations for the eight events will close on Friday next, February 15, with Mr. A. G. Mabee, secretary, Auckland Trotting Club, and Mr. T. G. Reynolds. the Waikato Club's secretary, at Hamilton, not later than 5 p.m. Mr. C. E. Gooseman will announce the handicaps on Tuesday, February 19, and acceptances close on Monday, February 25.
