DUNEDIN WHARF AFFRAY QUARTERMASTER BEFORE COURT Press’s Association DUNEDIN, To - day. Arnold Hinds, a coloured quartermaster of the steamer Bloemfontein, arrested in connection with the stabbing of Norman Maitland Childs, a taxidriver, appeared in the police court to answer a charge of assault so as to cause bodily harm, Detective-Sergeant Nuttall asked for a remand until January 23 to call two witnesses from the steamer Maimoa. Mr. A. C. Hanlon, for accused, was allowed to call evidence for the defence. Edwin Branch, quartermaster, stated that he saw no signs of a knife or blood about Hinds. William Robert Cherry, second officer, stated that after investigating the disturbance on deck. Hinds reported that visitors to the ship had been causing trouble. Some of the Maimoa’s crew were on the wharf later, and when somebody called out that a man had been stabbed he did not go down or allow any member of his crew to go. because lie thought it was a ruse to start a fight between the crews. He did not see Childs being put down the gangway by Hinds. A remand was granted.
