HOT POOLS IN SWAMP
THERMAL ACTIVITY AT MIRANDA NATURAL SWIMMING-BATHS (From Our Own Correspondent) PUKEKOHE, Monday. Unknown to the great majority of people, a thermal region exists at Miranda, on the Hauraki Clulf, some six miles south of New Brighton fKaiaua). In a quaky and desolate swamp adjacent to the Miranda-Waitakaruru Road, which follows the coastline, there are innumerable hot pools, the majority of which ar© only a few square feet in area, and about two feet in depth. The largest one, approximately 100 feet long, 20 feet wide, and from four to six feet deep, is well patronised by local residents as a swimming pool. The centre of activities appears to be a boiling pool situated a few hundred yards from that used for bathing. The whole area of the swamp 'is about 150 acres. During the week-end a Sun representative explored the region, and sampled a swim. The water was of a temperature in the vicinity of 100 degrees Falir. Like other mineral pools, the heat was overpowering after immersion for a few minutes, and the water much more buoyant than seawater. The pool is still in its natural state, being skirted by rushes and other swamp growth. Access is gained fairly easily. -
