BRITISH MOTOR BOOM
ORDERS GREATLY INCREASE CARS FOR THE COLONIES (United Service) Reccl. 8.13 a.m. LONDON, Monday. There are Australian, New Zealand, South African and Indian orders for motor-cars amounting to £1,300,000 for delivery before June, being an increase of £200,000 compared with the first half of last year. This, combined with the Home demand for .7-14 horse-power motor-cars, and also char-a-bancs, will create an unprecedented boom in the British industry. The makers of the three most popular light and baby cars are turning out 3,400 weekly, estimated to represent £680,000, considerably exceeding last year’s record before-Easter sales. Many other makers say their output exceeds the previous best by 20 per cent. The Scotland Yard authorities have approved a new British-made taxi-cab for London. It is fitted with safety glass, has a speed of 50 miles an hour, and costs £395. The cabs are to be produced at a rate of 150 a month.
