BOWLEY AGAIN

THREE-FIGURE INNINGS SEES PONSONBY BEATEN

Thanks largely to an energetic display by Bowley, Y.M.C.A. secured a somewhat unexpected, but none the lers popular win against Ponsonby. There was lively excitement toward the finish, but Bowley’s big knock proved sufficient to tide the Young Men over the inevitable tail-end collapse, and Bowley’s side ran out a winner with a dozen or two to spare. With three down for 57. the Young Men had made a very ordinary start, but the arrival of the coach stiffened up tho batting, and a prolific partnership between him and Lyon for the fifth wicket put 77 runs on to the score, and made a first iunings win practically secure. FIGHTING CRICKET Although scarcely at his best. Bowley played a sound, solid innings, making strong shots all round the wicket. He did not give a direct chance till he was past the century, and he appeared

to lose his wicket ultimately through tiredness. Considering tlie strength of tho Punsonby attack, it was a great lighting innings. Although prone to an exaggerated style, Lyon batted splendidly for his 39, and after the winning run had been obtained, he opened out, and made some sparkling shots. Sutherland also batted nicely for 21. Finlayson bore the brunt of a tiring day at the bowling crease. He deserved better figures. Throughout the innings he kept a splendid length, and even Bowley treated him with caution. Smith continued his steady run of success with the ball, and although Bowley battered his average severely, it was the ex-English amateur who eventually sent Bowley back to the pavilion.
