NINTH EARL OF EGMONT Title Goes to a Rancher THE death occurred yesterday of tlie Earl of Egmont. He was the ninth holder of the title and was horn in New Zealand on June 29, 1858. He succeeded his brother in 1910. The title goes to a distant kinsman, a rancher in Canada.

Particular interest Is attached to the Earl of Egmont from the point of view of New Zealanders, inasmuch as he was born in the Dominion, and the fact that Mount Egmont, in Taranaki, was named after one of the family.

; John, the second Earl of Egmont , (1711-70), was a prominent politician in the time of George 11., and from 1761 to 1766 he was First Lord of the Admiralty. When Captain Cook visited New Zealand he named Mount Egmont after the Earl. The earldom is an Irish title borne bv the family of Perceval since 1773. In 1661 Sir John Perceval was made a baronet, and the baronetcy passed in turn to several descendants, being inherited In 1691 by another Sir John (1663-1718). He was an M.P. and the first President of Georgia, which he helped to found. He was made successively baron, viscount and earl. John, the First Lord of the Admiralty, was the second earl, and in 176” he was made a British peer as Baron Lovel and Holland, and with that title the present earls sit in the House of Lords. Spencer Perceval, his son. was Prime Minister. For long the earls lived at Cowdray Park, Midhurst, but early in the twentieth century it was sold, and the Earl’s seat is now Avon Castle, Ringwood. Hants. The title is taken from a little place in County Cork, near where, at Barton House, the earlier Percevals lived. . Lord Egmont was educated at Colchester Grammar School and was in the merchant service for a time later joining the Natal Mounted Police He was also in the Border Customs, Zululand. He owns property The heir to the title is a distant kinsman, Frederick Joseph Trevelyan Perceval, who has been ranching in the Priddis district. Canada, for many years He is a widower and resides

on his holdings with a son aged 14. He has stated he has no intention i of dropping his business in Canada , to take up the earldom immediately. Frederick Joseph Trevelyan Perceval, the new Earl of Egmont, has been farming in the Priddis district for several years. He is a widower and resides on his land holdings. He has a son aged 14. Priddis is a remote hamlet. The new Earl is 55. He marrieCecilia, a daughter of Mr. James Burns-Moore, of Montreal, in 1911. His wife died in 1916. He states that he Las no intention of dropping every thing to take up the earldom immediately.
