ALFRED SMITH BECOMES PRIVATE CITIZEN AGAIN
STENOGRAPHERS WEEP AS GOVERNOR TAKES FAREWELL OF THEM
(United P.A.—By Telegraph Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Press Association > Reed. 9.5 a.m. ALBANY (N.Y.), Tues. F ranklin D. Roosevelt was to-day inaugurated Governor of New York State, and Governor Alfred E. Smith became a private citizen after having served four terms as Governor and spent 25 years in public life. Both the incoming and the outgoing Governor reviewed a military parade from a stand in front of the executive mansion, after which they motored to the Capitol for formal ceremonies.
Crowds lined the street at every point, cheering both Mr. Roosevelt and Mr. Smith, but particularly the latter, who was visibly affected by the demonstration.
1 ouching scenes also occurred when the retiring Governor bade farewell to his staff, many stenographers and others being in tears. Mr. Smith left for New York following the ceremonies.
