CLEAN SWEEP
VICTORIAN TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS N.S.W. WINS' ALL EVENTS In sultry weather the semi-finals and final of the Victorian mixed doubles championship were played recently. New South Wales winning the fifth and all of the Victorian titles. New South Wales players won the j singles and doubles in the men’s and women’s sections. By winning the mixed doubles with J. Willard, Miss Cox won her third championship, having already won the singles and the women’s doubles with Airs. Conway as her partner. COMPLETE SUCCESS For the first time for at least 30 years New South Wales met with absolute success. winning all the titles. In the semi-final of the championship, Airs. Harper and Sclilesinger (Victoria) defeated Crawford and Aliss Hoddle-Wrigley, and Willard and Aliss Cox (N.S.W.) defeated Hopman (N.S.W) and Aliss G. Toyne. Neither Crawford nor Hopman played well. Crawford made , many mistakes, and never attempted to force the play from the net. Aliss Hoddle-Wrigley placed well at the beginning, but had to take too much of the early play to continue in such good form. Both Schlesinger and Airs. Harper played well, pairing splendidly. In the other semi-final Hopman was out of touch, and made the mistake of taking too much of the play. Miss Toyne played comparatively well; but she was outclassed by Aliss Cox, who has probably never played better tennis. Willard, too, was in form, and made few mistakes from the net, liis favourite position. Aliss Cox continually out-drove Sclilesinger with diagonal shots, which he was content to try to play from the baseline. MIXED DOUBLES The New South Wales pair had set point at 5 — # 4 on Willard’s serve, but a missed sitter at the net cost them the game. The Victorians then went ahead to 6—5 before a. run of welljudged tosses by Aliss Cox broke up their formation, and drove Sclilesinger to the back of the court, where his best play was of little avail against the splendid driving of Aliss Cox and Willard’s net play. New South Wales won the set at 56, and soon led s—l in the next set, when the match seemed all over but, Schlesinger and Airs. Harper made the finest recovery of the week. Schlesinger seemed to realise that his baseline play was useless, and he came to the net more often. Willard and Aliss Cox had a lead of two points to love in two successive games; but still the Victorians played determined tennis until the score was 5 all. Then the Victorians slumped slightly, and with their opponents playing with the greatest care, the set and match went to Willard and Aliss Cox in two more games. The scores of matches played were: Alixed Doubles Championship.— Semi-finals: Schlesinger and Mrs. Harper beat Crawford and Aliss HoddleWrigley, (j—l, 6—4; Willard and Aliss Cox beat ITopman and Miss Toyne, 63, 6—2. Final.—Willard and Aliss Cox (N.S.W.) beat Schlesinger and Airs. Harper, B—6. 7—5.
