LATE SCRATCHINGS

r PH ERE* were many disgruntled racegoers at Ellerslie yesterday when they learned that Aussie and Paganelli were not starting in the Railway Handicap. No doubt the soft track was responsible for their withdrawal, but all the same the going was not really bad, for the sprint was run in 1.15. Awarere was started by the stable in preference to Aussie, and he drew the extreme outside, to run a splendid race under difficult condition's. The chestnut was always well out from the rails perforce, and into the home stretch he was up with the leaders, but on the extreme outer, so that it was not surprising that he stopped in the straight. It was a good run worthy of a happier result.
