G.N. DERBY MORE COMPLICATED NOW
LITTLE BETWEEN SEVERAL A number of G.reat Northern Derby candidates were seen in action at Ellerslie yesterday, and the result of their outings was only sufficient to further complicate the situation in that classic. Tcheka beat Gold Money by a head in the Queen’s Plate, but the latter should have won, for she got badly away—a common occurrence with the filly nowadays. Nevertheless the winner stuck- to his task well, and he may do well over a mile and a-half, whereas Gold Money may not. Of the others in the Queen’s Plate Kinross and Briar Jtoot both went nicely, the latte.r being badly placed after the field had travelled a couple of furlongs, having only a couple of horses behind her. Little can be said for the remainder, outside Cashier, who was a hot favourite. The Paper Money gelding had every chance, and it looked as if he did not relish his task up the straight on the jkvet track For this reason it may be best to .overlook this form. He should win before the meeting concludes. T a stronger field in the Christmas Handicap the three-year-olds finished in a heap. Pegaway as a winner represents good form, so that in finish- ‘"= second, third, fourth, fifth and eleventh respectively, Toxeuma. Red Heckle, Prodice, Concentrate and Sir be said to have done well the last-named apparently does not stay at present. Perception was not expected to show up in the big field, and he didn’t. On the first day’s form it can be J; hat a h already Derby contest lias been made even more difficult for the harassed punters, for there is little chance of there being other form to go upon before New Year’s Dav Dike the Auckland Cup, the Derby is ““ of , the "tost open races experienced for many years.
