How Corinax Won

AUCKLAND CUP TRIUMPH Supremacy’s Great Pace A STIRRING finish between Corinax and Laughing Prince in the Auckland Cup, and Nancy Lee and Silvermine In the Railway Handicap; preceded by an easy win by Supremacy in the Foal Stakes. These were features of yesterday’s racing at Ellerslie that helped to offset the wet weather conditions prevailing for the opening of the big racing carnival of the Auckland Racing Club.

Rain fell in the early hours of the morning, only to clear before daybreak, but the fixture was doomed to open in steady rain, which set in again three hours before racing -was timed to commence. It lifted soon after the first race, and then started again before the Cup was got off, and continued. intermittently throughout the afternoon. The course was not so bad for the first event, but it cut up before the last race was run. Despite the damp conditions underfoot the public rolled up in numbers, the attendance being estimated at about 25,000. Of course the totalisator suffered, the machine handling £95,753 10s, against £131,513 on the same day a year ago, a decrease of £35,729 10s, brought about mainly by the reduced attendance and the fact that many people preferred to retain their sheltered accommodation to facing the rain in order to invest. Best of Sport Once again Ellerslie upheld its fine record for splendid racing, the pick of North Island horses being seen in competition with the best the South Island could send up. After a lapse of 17 years an Auckland horse won the Cup, this being Corinax, trained at Ellerslie, the other places being filled by Laughing Prince and Catkin, with the veteran Count Cavour. elevated to the post of honour by backers, fourth. It was a fine contest, rather marred toward the finish by some jostling between the first and second horses. The Railway Handicap was won by Nancy Lee, who narrowly defeated the favourite, the C.J.C Stewards’ Handicap winner, Silvermine (whose owner would be in a measure compensated by two wins at his home course, New Plymouth, through the agency of Orazone and Llanore), and Bright Glow, both trained at Hawera.

Supremacy was not all out to win the Foal Stakes, registering a sterling performance, for he drew the outside at the barrier and this was a decided handicap. However, after conceding the leaders over four leingths over the last three furlongs, the Te Awamutu gelding buried them for speed. The 2,300gn5. colt Honour was second and Ceremony third, both showing pace, with the former staying on at the end.

An interesting contest was the Queen’s Plate, victory going to Tcheka, owned by the new Minister of Justice, the Hon. T. M. Wilfoi’d.

The meeting was conducted in a manner typical of Ellerslie, the races getting off to time, and there were no untoward incidents. Notes on the racing and results follow. QUEEN’S PLATE

Gold Money appeared to be a good thing beaten in the opening event, the Queen’s Plate, getting badly away and then being a close second. Cashier £2.437 was a solid favourite, and there was also money for Gold Money £1,013 and Arikitoa £897, the winner carrying £472. , Gold Money, Big Bertha and Arikitoa were left, Tcheka, Amor, Lido, Camp Prince, Saucy Lass and Aggressive being the early leaders. Passing the five furlongs Tcheka and Lido were together in the van from Camp Prince, Kinross, Gold Money, Amor and Moorgas. Tcheka and Lido were still on terms crossing the top and into the straight, followed closely by Camp Prince, Gold Money, Amor, Kinross, Moorgas and Komak. Gold Money was in front at the distance, but Tcheka came again and managed to wear her down to get a head decision. Lido hung on to get third money, two and a-half lengths away, and Amor was fourth. Then came Kinross, Briar Root (who was unlucky). Modest Boy. Komak, Camp Prince, Moorgas and Arikitoa. GREAT NORTHERN FOAL STAKES The expected defections of Awamutu and Count Palatine from the G.N. Foal Stakes left a classy field of eight, anrl Supremacy, revelling in the soft track, won impressively. He was favourite with £2,875, Honour £2,817 counting a lot of friends, while there was support for Ceremony £1<486, Speed Light £1.391 apd Gold Tinge £1,321. A good start saw Speed Light, on the rails, quickest into her stride, followed closely by Carl Idem, Ceremony and Honour, with a gap back to Supremacy, Imperial Prince, Gold Tinge and Clopton. At the end of a furlong and a-half Speed Light was half a length in advance of Ceremony, with Supremacy a couple of lengths further back, just in front of Honour, Carl Idem. Clopton and Gold Tinge, with Imperial Prince last. Turning for home, Ceremony was half a length in front of Speed Light, with Supremacy four lengths back, two lengths in advance of Honour, with Gold Tinge, Imperial Prince, and Clopton following. At the distance Supremacy was just about up with Ceremony and Speed Light, with Honour handy, but from this out there was only one in it, Supremacy going ahead to win handsomely by a couple of lengths from Honour, with Ceremony another length back. Speed Light was three lengths back fourth, and a similar distance bs.ek were Imperial Prince and Clopton,' with Carl Idem last. It was a fine race. The first furlong took 14 3-5, two furlongs 26 4-5, and the first three 38 1-5, the full time, 1.16 3-5, being slow in the holding going. ROBINSON HANDICAP

Best backed in the back seven were Storm Fiend £ 1,479. Phillipic £1,304, Vallar £SB6, and Wi/some Boy £709. Fnothblower, Sea Cob and Cat-c-----mes were left and Vallar shot out from Bannock, Arihana, "Winsome Boy. Miss Myrtle and Mon 'Star. Crossing the top Vallar was still in the van. being followed by Arihana, Air King.

Mussie. Bannock. Eager Rose, Zane Grey, Good Boy, Storm Fiend and War Officer. When the home turn was negotiated, Vallar was still the leader, his nearest attendant being Arihana, Air King. Mussie, Eager Rose, War Officer and Bannock. The run home saw Vallar easily hold his opponents to win by almost two lengths from Mussie, who was three-parts of a length in front of War Officer, with Eager Rose close up fourth. Then came Arihana. Good Boy, Air King. Palmares, Bannock, Phillipic, Miss Myrtle, Storm Fiend, Royal Flower and Sea Cob. AUCKLAND CUP Count Cavour £3,757 was elected favourite for the Cup contest, with Oratrix £3,236 next in order, followed by Laughing Prince £2,476, Hoy lake £2.179, with £1,327 invested on the ultimate winner, Corinax. The race was run in a heavy downpour. Hoylake was the first to snow out from Laughing Prince, Count Cavour, Mask, Papatu, but there was a quick change, and crossing the top Corinax went to the front from Papatu, Catkin. Talisker. Laughing Prince, Mask, Desert Glow, Hoy lake and Count Cavour. Papatu was the pilot passing the stands, with Corinax, Talisker, Desert Glow, Hoylako and Count Cavour in close attendance. There was practically no change going out of the straight, but along the back Corinax assumed command from Papatu, Catkin, Desert Glow, Laughing Prince. Hoylake, Talisker, Count Cavour, Mask, ’Ortarix, Tidal and Transformer. As the field swept across the top, Catkin dashed to the van, and leaving the bunch turned for home two lengths clear of Corinax, who was a similar distance in front of Laughing Prince, after whom came Desert Glow, Count Cavour, Papatu, Hoylake, Talisker, Oratrix and Mask. Corinax headed Catkin halfway down the running, and Laughing Prince issued a strong challenge, but failed to reach Corinax by three parts of a length. Catkin was two lengths back in third berth, and the favourite fourth. Next to cross the line were Hoylake, Talisker, Desert Glow, Oratrix, Papatu. Mask, Tidal and Transformer. Sectional times were as under: Two furlongs, 28 1-5; four furlongs, 54 2-5: six furlongs, 1.22; ten furlongs, 2.16 4-5; /twelve furlongs, 2.43 3-5; and full journey, 3.32 3-5. GRAFTON HURDLES The Hannon bracket. King's Guard and Ripon Abbey, was first choice with backers for the jumping contest, carrying £2,076, but there was good support for Pouri £1,631, Lady Cintra £1,443, and Beaumont £1,304. Beaumont led out from Uralla to the initial jump, where the latter fell, with Lady Cintra and Ripon Abbey next in order, but the last-named soon went to the front and piloted the field past the stands, with Beaumont, Lady Cintra, Mangani, Mangaiti, King’s Guard, Potoanui and Pouri following in that order, Lady Cintra moved to the front going down the back, with Ripon Abbey, Beaumont, Mangaiti, King’s Guard and Mangani as her nearest attendants. The three leaders negotiated the second to last obstacle safely, but Mangaiti fell and brought down Potoanui and Pouri. Beaumont was the first to turn into the home stretch, followed by Mangani, Lady Cintra, /■King’s Guard, but Mangani was in front as they cleared the final hurdle; and going on won comfortably by two and a-half lengths from Beaumont, with Lady Cintra three lengths back in third place, followed by Wharncliffe, King’s Guard and Ripon Abbey. RAILWAY HANDICAP In a good pool Silvermine £2,593 wound up favourite over Consent £1,(594, Nancy Lee £1,434 and Bright Glow £1,358. Bright Glow began quickest and was followed out by Silvermine, Nancy Lee, Staghunter. Lysander and Billikins, but crossing the top Nancy Lee went ,to the front from Silvermine, Staghunter, Billikins, Lysander, Awarere, Consent and Bright Glow. As the straight was approached

Staghunter and Silvermine drew level with Nancy Lee, and Awarere joined issue, the quartet turning for home practically on terms, Staghunter having the slightest advantage, while Kingfield, Consent and Bright Glow were also handy. Half-way to the judge Nancy Lee began to assert her claim, and doing best crossed the line a winner by a clear length, .with Bright Glow half a length away third, and White Wings fourth. Then came Staghunter, Consent, High Finance, Awarere. White Fang, Cimabue, Billikins, Kingfield, Jolly Money, Crown Area, Marble King and Lysander. NURSERY HANDICAP The public sorted Gemlight out as the good thing, the Treclare gelding being entrusted with £2,280. Eaglet £1,269, and Desert Song £1,237 were the best supported of the remainder, while Dalston, who finished second, earned only £2Ol. Awamutu was badly left, and took no part in the race, and Love Call was slow to get away. Eaglet was first to become prominent, and showed the way to Desert Song, Tea Queen, Gemlight. Cymon and Polyxena. When the field raced along on the course proper Eaglet was still in the foreground, from Tea Queen, Dalston, Desert Song and this trio turned for home in advance of Bennie. Gemlight and Cymon. Eaglet finished well to win by a length and a-half from Dalston, with Tea Queen two lengths away third, followed by Bennie, Poiyxena, Gemlight, Desert Song. Tasty, Love Call, Terrazzo and Flying Prince. CHRISTMAS HANDICAP Nippy was left and Le Choucas led

out from Ballymoy 11., Concentrate and Toxeuma. Concentrate was the leader along the back with Ballymoy 11., Toxeuma, Red Heckle and Flying Juliet following closely. Toxeuma and Sir Russel were the leaders at the home turn with Red Heckle and Concentrate handy. Once in line for the judge Pegaway, who was always well back, came with a rattle to win by a narrow margin from Toxeuma with Red Heckle a head away. Concentrate, Siaosi, Master O’Rorke, Flying Juliet, King Emerald, Sir Russell and Royal Doulton were next to cross the line. The best backed horses in this event were Prodice £2,284, King Lu £1,678, Royal Doulton £1.326, Red Heckle £1,215 and Pegaway £1,140.
