Star Area's Surprise In Manawatu Cup

BENZORA BEATS ARROW LAD SHOCK FOR PUNTERS IN TRIAL (Special to THE SUN) PALMERSTON N., Wednesday. The course was soft for the opening day of the Manawatu races at Awapuni to-day. There were numerous surprises, and favourites had a bad time. The totalisator handled £43,399, against £54,647 last year. The Hurdles Elysianar £1,119, wa» a firm favourite for the jumping event (all nine acceptors starting). Vexatious £760, being preferred to Cohesion £686. The favourite went to the fronx from Red Rank and Cohesion, with a gap to Decoy Bird and Panorama, but at the straight entrance Red Bank had assumed the lead from Elysianor, with Cohesion. Diana’s Lad, Panorama and Decoy Bird racing next. Elysianor made a forward move, while Panorama also lodged a challenge. Red Bank, however, came again to hold his place and win by a length from Panorama, who caught the favourite in the last few yards, half a length separating second and third. Diana’s Lad was fourth. Othon and Braeman being the next to finish. Maiden Plate War Zone was the solo defection from the Maiden Plate. Roi de Val £942, was preferred to Black Maire £ 574, and Mothplane £448. St. Melba rushed to the front from the barrier rise from Roi de Val, Black Maire, Mangaharei and Kentish Lady, with the field strung out. Round the turn Kentish Lady was actually the first from Mangaharei, Black Maire and St. Melba. In the run to the post Mangaharei drew out from St. Melba to win by a good length, Monetize getting up to take third money, two lengths away. Black Maire was fourth, being followed by the favourite. Tararua Hack Ciena Bay £1,059, was installed a lirm favourite from Rory Mor '£62B, with good money for Courageous in the Tararua Hack Handicap. Rory Mor was the smartest to begin from Bissac, and Shining Star went to the front to lead down the back from Rory Mor, Cloyne, Coldbag and King Quex. Approaching the straight. Rory Mor wrested the lead from B.ssac, with Goldbag anti Courageous in line. However, when heads were straightened out King Quex came through on the rails, and in a good finish beat Rory Mor by half a length, with Henna, who came fast from the ruck, a similar distance back. Courageous was fourth. Manawatu Cup A great betting race in the Manawatu Cup saw' the Southerner First Sight £1,783, a firm favourite from Mandane £1,164. and Merry Damon £859. The latter was actually the first to begin, but immediately gave way to Star Area, "while before the turn out of the straight had been reached Seatown had moved up behind the leader, with Mandane, Mountain Heath. First Sight and Imperial Spark ahead of Merry Damon. who had dropped back quickly. Entering the stretch Mandane was pulled up bleeding half a mile from home, where Star Area was still well clear of Seatown. Mountain Heath, First Sight and Imperial Spark, with the others moving up. In the straight Seatown promised to be the winner, but Star Area came again and held off the challenge to win by a neck. Mountain Heath being three lengths back, just ahead c*f Birst Sight. Historic was fifth with Discourse. Imperial Spark and Hynanna next to finish. Nursery Handicap

Several declined their engagements m the Nursery Handicap, in which Clever (£1.035) was installed favourite from First Money <£66S) and Admiral Drake (£588), and the trio all gained placings. From a good start in which Imperial Guard was left standing and Hunting Call was slow to move. Clever was smartest to find her feet from Praeda. Sapient and First Money. The favourite led right into the straight, where First Money headed Praeda and went up to Clever, but the Psychology filly responded to pressure and drew' away again to win by a length from First Money, with Praeda three lengths back. Admiral Brake finished strongly to take fourth Place, being followed home bv Becky Sharp. Statuary and Hot Springs. for leadership. Veronese landed first into the straight, but Borsalene came through and a battle between the pair marked the defeat of yet another favourite, Borsalene finishing the better to win from Veronese by a length, with First Ruler half a length away. Australis finished in fourth placing ahead of Full Mark and Shot Silk. Fitzherbert Handicap Gascony and Silver Coot failed to face the starter in the Fitzherbert Handicap, in which Benzora (£1,206) was in strong demand, Silver Paper (£860) and Arrow Lad (£824) being also the medium of strong support. Helotis shot out from the tapes with her customary smartness to lead Callanmore, Lady Ideal and Doree along the back, but the last-named gave way to Silver Paper half a mile from home. Jeanette put in an appearance at the straight entrance, and was up with Helotis when heads were straightened out. Benzora and Callanmore being ahead of Arrow Lad. At the distance Benzora drew out, with Arrow Lad in pursuit, but the favourite held his position to win by a neck and thus break the run of “outs” by favourites. Two lengths back came Jeanette, with Doree next. Grandstand Handicap Mendip was a hot order for the Grandstand Handicap, and Vivo also was well backed. Kilmezzo led into the straight from Pdnther and Mendip, and in a close finish Panther beat Kilmezzo by a nose, with Mendip half a length away third and Miss Pat fourth.
