Obituary

MR. WILLIAM P. SUCH Air. William Parker Such, of Bassett Road, Remuera, who has died at the age of 83, worked on the railways for over 30 years. He entered the service shortly after his arrival in the Dominion and spent most of the time in the Waikato district. At the time of his retirement he was an officer at the Newmarket Station, and afterwards he had lived in Auckland. Mrs. Such died over 20 years ago. Air. Such is survived by three sons and five daughters. There are 45 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchil-dren. CAPTAIN JOHNSTON Captain George Johnston, V.D., wh# has died at Waverley at the age of 80, was born in Auckland in 1848. went to Napier in 1864, taking part in engagements against the Maoris on the East Coast. Later Captain Johnston took part in the expedition to Taupo. He went to Wanganui in 1868 and during the trouble with the natives on the West Coast, served in the famous Kai Iwi troop under Captain John Bryce. He also served as a scout under Colonel Frazer in Poverty Bay, later becoming a member of the Aramoho Light Horse and Wairoa Light Horse. When the latter company became the Wairoa Mounted Rifles he served as its captain for 10 years, retiring on the unattached list in 1893. While living in the Waverley district Captain Johnston served on many local bodies, including the Patea. County Council and Harbour Board. He was closely interested in the dairy industry and was a founder of the Waverley Dairy Company and the West Coast Refrigerating Company, being chairman of both. For some years he was a director of the South Taranaki Shipping Company and the Waverley Town Hall Company. Captain Johnston is survived by six sons and four daughters.
