LANDMARK REMOVED
OTAHUHU’S FIREBELL REPLACED BY MODERN SIREN The firebell at the junction of Great South Road and Panmure Road, after 16 years* useful service, has been removed to the rear of the Otahuhu Fire Brigade Station for use in case of breakdown of the electric siren. The bell, which is made of cast steel, was manufactured in Sheffield in 1883 by the firm of Vickers and Sons. Ltd., and was used to good purpose in Albert Street, Auckland, in the days of horse-drawn fire engines. With the growth of Auckland the more up-to-date electric system was installed, and the well-known landmark was moved to Otahuhu, then only a village. In turn Otahuhu passed the villags stage, and a more modern method was found necessary to call the fire-fighters together. An electric siren now surmounts the fire brigade station. The work of removing the bell and tower was undertaken by the members of the brigade, who carried out the work in their spare time, the only expense to the borough being a small outlay for materials necessary for the new foundation. Since its removal borough council employees have been engaged in improving the old site of the tower.
