LIFELONG SERVICE Miss Fanny Coburne, a 13-years-old domestic servant of Wiltshire, England, has recently completed 60 years of unbroken service with one mistress. She was presented with ail annuity by relations of her old employer. who is now 98 years of age. ACROSS DARKEST AFRICA Miss Diana Strickland has just returned to London after a motor tour of 7.000 miles across Darkest Africa. Most of the journey she accomplished by herself, as the surveyor and the mechanic who accompanied her at the outset fell ill, and one died and the other returned to England. The British authorities refuse her permission to travel through the Wadi country alone, but Miss Strickland cheerfully defied them, went In by herself, and emerged safely. Her journey was enlivened by many incidents, but she came through all her adventures unbeaten and unharmed. A COTTON BROKER May Davis, of Philadelphia, has chosen the cotton-trading business as her profession and is said to be the only woman cotton broker. At fourteen she commenced her business career in a law office. Later she entered the service of a cotton-brokerage firm, where she studied the business, and after three years opened her own office. Within six months she sold 20,000 bales of cotton. As a side-line she runs an employment agency, and between whiles, as Mrs. Daniel A. Hoffman, she manages a home and cares for two sons.. She is incidentally very beautiful, and has been painted by Augustus John and also by the Princess Alexandra of Schleswig-Holstein, a daughter-in-law of the ex-Kaiser. IN PALESTINE The owner of one of the most sacred places in Palestine is Mrs. Oliphant, widow of Lawrence Oliphant, the English writer, who settled in Palestine long before the war with the idea of assisting the return of the Jews and bringing the Holy Land into greater prominence by means of books about it. Mrs. Oliphant herself is publishing a book entitled “My Perilous Life in Palestine.” She is a grand-daughter of Robert Owen, who also had views upon the return of the Jews and its significance regarding he Millennium. Incidentally, Mrs. Oiiphant has purchased an estate at Megiddo, in the Plain of Esdraelon, which, according to the prophets, is the actual site upon which the final judgment is to take place. A ROYAL NEEDLEWOMAN Princess Marthe, of Sweden, is said to be th© most accomplished royal needlewoman.
