OHURA-STRATFORD LINE

PROGRESS WITH CONSTRUCTION BUILDING OF NEW TUNNELS (From Our Own Correspondent) TAUMARUNUI, Friday. There is evidence of marked activity in the construction of the eastern end of the Ohura-Stratford railway, ancl excellent progress is being: made. Work on the Ohuru-Tokirima section is at present being pushed along rapidly by the Public Works Department, and every effort is being made to get the job as far ahead as possible while the summer weather lasts. A gang of steam navvies, and streams of motorlorries, are shaping out the route, and a large number of men are employed. Work-trains are now carrying material through the first tunnel, which has been completed, and the second tunnel is well under way. The necessary plant has been installed for commencing the third, fourth, and fifth tunnels, and this wort: will be put under way at once. Section-built houses are being despatched to the Turoto Road camp, between the two largest tunnels. This camp was cut off from headquarters by bad roads for most of the winter, but metalling operations are being hurried forward, to ensure communications being kept open next year. It is reported on what appears to be reliable authority that a commencement will be made this summer with the Tokirima station yards, this completing the total in on eight-mile length of the line that will be actively dealt with.
