Marceline Day and Dorothy Sebas- j tian are taking lessons in clog dancing, taps, shuffle dancing and other eccentric forms from Eddie Nugent, actor and former vaudeville “hoofer.” Mary Philbin has finished her starring role in “Salvage,” directed by Wesley Ruggles for Universal/ and will co-star next with Conrad Veidt. A few years ago Wesley was a freckled juvenile star, • * * Ted Lewis, the jazz band king, has • sailed for France, to fill a brief engagement in Paris before beginning work on his first motion-picture, “Is Everybody Happy?” for Warner Brothers. One of the first talking productions started for Paramount is “The Carnation Kid,” starring Douglas Mac Lean. Frances Lee, star of the “Confessions of a Chorus Girl” series, will be leading woman. William Powell, “menace” in a great number of Paramount films, plays the hero in a forthcoming screen version of S. S. Van Dlne’s “The Canary Mur- | der Case.” He is Philo Vance, the j detective. * * * | Almost as well known as Haya- ; kawa is his charming little wife, i Tsuri Aoki, who was also born in \ Japan, educated in America and | played in many pictures. Her father j was a cartoonist on a San Francisco pa.per. j Dolores Costello, demure heroine of i many historical romances, has j emerged In complete neiv guise in j “The Redeeming Sin.” Playing an j Apache girl in the Paris underworld, her manners and costumes are equally provocative. Belle Bennett, identified with emotional roles of the “weepy” type, will give a surprise in “The Burlesque Queen.” “I have wanted to do a comedy part for ever so long,” says Miss Bennett, “but seemed to be ‘set’ ! as an emotional actress.”
Jetta Goudal will play the role of Simone, Parisian demimondaine of the court of Napoleon HI in “The Love | Song.” David Wark Griffith is the j director. George Fawcett becomes a ! German Ambassador in “The Love j Song.”
William J. Locke to Write Scenario AW IL LI AM J. LOCKE, the novel- * * ist, who is author of more than 30 novels, is in Hollywood to write an original story for Norma Talmadge. He is accompanied by his wife and daughter, who will remain with him until after Christmas, when Locke will have completed his work. It is said that Mr. Locke has been offered £IO,OOO to do the story for Norma, which, accord ing to Hollywood gossip, will make a ‘‘good woman,” histrionically speaking, of Miss Talmadge.
