NAVAL SPORTS
CREW OF H.M.S. PHILOMEL ENJOYABLE NOVELTY EVENTS Wet ground and occasional driving showers of rain greeted the ship’s company and trainees of H.M.S. Philomel on the occasion of their annual sports at Devonport yesterday afternoon. A big crowd was kept highly amused by the large number of novelty events that were on the programme. A thrilling chariot race, obstacle races, and the chief event of the day. a tug-of-war, in which the Philomel team defeated a much heavier team of Royal Marines, kept interest at its keenest. A veterans’ race, in which officers were the chief participants, was exciting, and the success of the chaplain, the Rev. G. T. Robson, was loudly cheered. The children were catered for in a number of races and amused by the antics of three seamen dressed as clowns. Commodore G. T. C. P. Swabey was present and Mrs. Swabey presented the trophies and prizes at the close of the meeting. During the afternoon a musical programme was given by the band of H.M.S. Diomede, under Mr. W. F.
