ESCAPE THROUGH WINDOW
BLAZE AT MT. EDEN HOUSE TOTALLY DESTROYED Fire totally destroyed a twostoreyed dwelling in Peary Road, Mount Eden, at 1.45 a.m. to-day. The occupants were awakened by smoke and made their escape through a front window. The house contained four rooms on the top floor and on the ground floor were two .rooms, . the. wash-house and I the bathroom. When the Mount Eden Fire Brigade arrived the house was a mass of flames, and it was impossible to do anything. The house was owned by Mr. W. H. Hawthorne and occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Francis, who were the only people in the house at the time of the fire. It was insured in the Exchange Office for £9OO, but the contents were not covered. Had the brigade not arrived promptly the adjoining house might also have been seriously damaged. Less - than an hour before the brigade answered a call to a shop near Rocklands Avenue, Dominion Road. The owner of the shop had been smoking fish and had opened the door to allow the smoke to escape. A passing milkman saw the smoke and gave the alarm.
