OPENING OF PARLIAMENT

HER EXCELLENCY IN GOWN OF VIVID BLUE CROWDED GALLERIES (Special to THE SUN) WELLINGTON, Friday. Throngs of people attended the ceremony held on Wednesday in the Legislative Council to mark the opening of Parliament. The crowd was so large that many people could not gain admittance to the House of Representatives, and the gallery for the Ministers’ wives was filled before they were able to reach it from the Council Chamber. Before the arrival of the GovernorGeneral, her Excellency the Lady Alice Fergusson entered the Legislative Council wearing a graceful gown of gentian blue georgette, panelled with mechlin lace. Her hat of crinoline straw was trimmed with pretty leaves of georgette. A rose and bronze coloured bouquet was presented to her by the Speaker of the Legislative Council. Mrs. J. G. Coates, who was in an ensemble of honey-beige lace and georgette collared with summer fur and a matching balibuntal hat, was also given a dainty bouquet to tone with her toilette. Mrs. Coates was seated on the floor of the chamber with the wives of Ministers, who included: — Lady Carncross, who wore a frock of pearl grey silk and lace, and grey plumed hat. Lady Statham, in navy georgette, mounted on beige and beige hat. Lady Rhodes, who wore a cyclamen marietta frock and black coat a darker shade than her gown. Miss Downie Stewart, who was m georgette, inlet with lace over cream, and black hat with uncurled feathers. Lady Pomare, in an ensemble of ivory tricolette, and a red hat. Mrs. R. A. Wright, in green ensemble suit, with touches of gold and hat to match. ... Mrs. Williams, in black and white patterned silk and black coat and hat. Miss Skerrett, in black with hat in bronze shades. Mrs. R. Seddon, in black, with touches of mauve. Mrs. Bernard Wood, in an ensemble of ficelle pleated georgette and a shady hat to tone.

FOUR YEARS OLD

GAY CHILDREN’S PARTY AT HERNE BAY Yesteday afternoon little Master Noel Trevor Tovey, of Napier, who has just become four years old, was a flushed and happy little guest of honour at a delightful birthday paxty given for him at his grandmother’s, Mrs. Charles de Joux’s home In Ferguson Street, Herne Bay, where Mrs. Rex Tovey, of Napier, acted as hostess. A photograph was taken of all the little guests, and then they trooped into the house, where they were all given balloons and quaint little favours of many kinds. After that the drawing-room was a popular place, for here a moving-pic-ture programme was ( shown for the children’s entertainment, and was followed by musical items given by Miss Stella Lamond, Mr. Maurice Guttridge, Miss Rona Thompson, Miss Gladys Keeffe, Master Harold Greig, Mr. Jack Reilly, Mr. Trevor Eady and Mr. Carl Halreigal. The little guests included the Misses Elsie and Rona Thompson, Gladys and Wilma Keeffe, Eileen Bell, Ruby Hardley, Patricia Eady, Mavis Nottingham, Doris Leyland, Phyllis Stevens, Joyce Byant and Masters Ken and Jim Wade, Ray Bowden, Harold Greig, Ray Stevens, Billie Avery, Andrew Poison, Noel Taylor, Jack Leyland, Maurice Casey, Max Cleary. The grown-ups present were Mrs. Trevor Eady, Mrs. Adrian Greig, Miss Glory Taylor and Miss E. de Joux. Little Noel was presented with innumerable gifts during the afternoon, and the party finished with the most wonderful birthday tea.
