PUKEKOHE POTATOES

SHARP DECLINE EXPECTED PUKEKOHE, Friday. Local merchants predict a sharp decline in the price of new potatoes early in the coming week. During the current season growers in the Pukekohe and surrounding districts have experienced one of the best seasons on record, and in consequence have been able to recoup some of the losses sustained in the past few years. The wonderful, almost abnormal, spring growth proved beneficial to the young crops, and yield per acre was considerably higher. The shortage of Southern tubers resulted in a keen demand being made for the new seasons crop, which fact resulted in prices being maintained at a good figure. Early this week the local price rose to £l4, but subsequently was superseded by £l2 a ton. Merchants consider that a reduction will follow' the commencement of digging in the Hawke’s Bay and Wellington Provinces. Already Pukekohe has lost several markets in these two districts.
