CLEVER MUSIC STUDENTS

MR. WALTER IMPETT’S RECITAL A students’ recital of unusual merit was given at the Lewis Eady concert ■ hall last evening, by the advanced pupils of Mr. Walter Impett, one of Auckland’s well-known musicians and teacher of music and singing. A long programme of carefully selected items provided expressive evidence of the splendid material upon which Mr. Impett is working, and the manner in which the performers acquitted themselves indicated clearly that a year of hard work had been accomplished by both tutor and pupils. It was a fruitful year, for the recital was a gratifying success. Many of the singers have nicely developing voices, and show promise of attaining distinction in the musical sphere. Particularly pleasing were the three pianoforte performers— Misses Ailsa Walker, Una Cleave and Jean Millar. The two last-named are girls of tender years, but the difficult works they undertook to play gave them no trouble whatever. Miss ; Walker is a soloist of degree, and was featured well in a duet with Mr. Impett. The Minster singers, a quartet of ! mixed voices, comprising Miss Gladys j Uosking (soprano). Miss Maida Davi- j son (contralto), Mr. A. L. Macpherson (tenor) and Mr. Roy Stephenson j (baritone), gave several pretty num-i bers with and without piano accom- i paniment. “A Spring Song,” their j opening number, was later followed by “An Evening Pastorale” and “In England, Merrie England.” Misses Davison and Uosking and Mr. Stephenson were heard in creditable solo numbers. The pianoforte items, which covered a wide range of composers and which were creditably executed, were: “Impromptu in A flat” (Schubert), Miss Jean Millar; “Andante and Rondo Capriccioso” (Mendelssohn), Miss Una Cleave; “Valse in A flat,” Miss Ailsa Walker. Vocal selections, which were greatly enjoyed by the audience, were: “Snowflakes,” Miss May Ross; “Serenade,” Miss Gladys Hosking; “Linden Lea,” Mr. Ernest Jennings; “April is a Lady,” Miss Reka Paterson; “Vulcan’s Song,” Mr. George Pardington; “Ave Maria” ((Gaston-Cooper), Miss Ivy Doyle; Mephistopheles Serenade frorrr “Faust,” Mr. Weild A. Paterson; “Yesterday and To-day,” Miss Kathleen Conway; “The Jester,” Mr. Roy Stephenson; “Vainka’s Song,” Miss Ruby Moselen; “A Feast of Lanterns,” Miss Maida Davison; “Love That’s True Will Live Forever,” Mr. Kenneth J. Dellow. Throughout the recital Mr. Impett himself played the pianoforte accompaniment for the singers, handling each number in a masterly way
