In the Market Place
APRICOTS OFFERING TOMATO PRICES WEAKER Local apricots were offered for the first time this season on the City Markets to-day. Very large quantities of hothouse tomatoes are now being sold. Prices show a weakening tendency, but they are expected to improve shortly. STRAWBERRIES are now plentiful. They are selling fairly freely. The demand is very poor for dessert and cooking pears. Local apples are hard to clear at low rates. Local Delicious have now gone off the market. This week’s shipment of Sydney fruit was large. Red and black cherries and oranges are selling well. The vegetable market is very heavily supplied with new potatoes, green peas, cabbages and cucumbers. The inquiry for all lines of vegetables is fair. To-day’s poultry auction saw heavy supplies, with prices up to those of last week. Choice cockerels are in shorter supply and prices are firm. Lighter cockerels show a slight decrease. Heavy hens are selling at good rates. Light hens are meeting with a good demand at low values. The supply of turkeys is small at present and values are high. Old ducks and young drakes are plentiful. In the small stock market, baconer pigs are bringing £3 6s to £3 ISs; porkers, £2 to £2 10s: slips, 16s to £1 6s: and weaners, to 12s.
