AUSTRALIAN TREATY
CANADIAN TORY ATTACK (Australian and N.Z. Press Association} Reed. 9.5 a.m. VICTORIA (8.C.), Wed. Speaking in support of the Conservative candidate, Mr. D. P. Plunkett, in the Victorian by-election, Mr. R. B. Bennett, the Tory leader, made the first direct attack on the Australian Treaty. He claimed that under the treaty, because of the dumping clause, no butter was admitted to Canada, yet the pact extended to New Zealand, from which country there was on order to-day 250,000 cases. Referring to lumber export, he said Australia buys 350,000,000 ft. yearly, and only 50,000,000 ft from Canada. Lumber t is not in the treaty, so Canada gets no preference. He appealed for the economic independence of Canada, admitted its prosperity, but claimed that the conditions were unhealthy.
