WATER SUPPLY GOOD
ALL DAM-LEVELS DOW* NO ABNORMAL DEMAND Though there has been a fair Mg of fine weather there has been no at* normal demand for water in Auckland, and the city dams, though an below their level, are many millions of gallons better off than they were last year. Exactly a year ago, on December t, the water supply was already giving the City Council cause for fear, and when the water consumption jumped to 11,000,000 gallons in a day and created a record, warnings against waste, and the possibility of restrictions, were issued. At that time the water in storage amounted to 600,000,000. This year there is a different story, and so far there has been no warning voice from the Town Hall. The heightening of the Waitakere dam has considerably improved the storage capacity, with the result that there are still over 900,000,000 gallons in storage, even though the Waitakere dam is down lft. 6in., representing 30,000.000 gallons, the Nihotupu is down 4ft. pin. or 40,000,000 gallons, and the Nihotupu auxiliary' is down 10ft., also representing 40,000,000. Three days ago the water in storage was 941,000,000 gallons. The daily consumption for the city is averaging about eight and a-half million gallons, and on no day has the consumption reached 10,000,000, though it probably will do so later in the season. By this time last year the water running into the dams was two and a-half million gallons a day. but the supply is better this year, and three and a-half million gallons daily is running into the dams. In addition, the council can draw another million gallons a a a> or more from the Huia works if necessary.
