COMMITTEE’S RESIGNATION

CONFERENCE AT DARGAVILLE (From Our Own Correspondent) PAItGAVILLE, Tuesday. Recently the Durgaville School Coni mittee tendered its resignation, which, however, was not accepted by the Auckland Education Board. East evening Mr. Elliott, treasurer of the board, met the local committee at a round-tamo conference. Mr. fcj. t i.. Barker presided. In welcoming Air. Elliott lie said that thu committee had not resigned because members had lost interest in school committee work, but simply because it could not carry on under present conditions. Members thought it best rather than to get deeper into debt to resign. If llie board could show them a way uul of their difficulties and provide them with sufficient money to carry on, they were quite willing to do so. The committee was somcm hat dil'fe .-entiy situated to other committees, in that they had three different buildings to maintain, which fact greatly increased. maintenance -S. tile High Bcliool was costing about £BO a year extra, and this, ivitli v water rates, £B9 a l car, made it impossible to carry on. The committee appreciated the help tlio board naU given in the past but l'elt that it uas unbusinesslike to be always going to the board, cap in hand, for a special grant to help them out. It would bo far better if a iixed amount was paid quarterly or monthly, so that they could pay tlieir way. The committee was careful with its money and had never spent a penny on any, tiling that was not necessary-. Mr. Elliott thanked th© committee tor its welcome, and the spirit in which they had met him. He promised that after he had gone into the matter thoroughly with the present secretary and the late secretary, he would report to the board. He felt satisfied that after hearing both sides of the question that matters would be fixed up satisfactorily, so that, members would bo able to continue in office. He fullf realised the difficulties which the committee uas working under, and assured them that the board was out to do its best as far as the regulations would permit. Mr. Elliott was accorded a hearty voto of thanks.
