Mervette Completes A Fine Treble

VALROE SCORES AGAIN BIG DIVIDEND IN HURDLES The Te Kuiti Racing Club was distinctly unfortunate in meeting such bad weather for the concluding day’s .racing yesterday. The weather was showery at the outset, heavy rain falling during the middle of the afternoon and the course became soft. The attendance was considered good under the circumstances. With big dividends in the first two races, and plenty of rain, the totalisator had to suffer. The sum of £10,988 10s was put through the machine yesterday, and lor the two days the totaL was £25,864 10s, compared with £25,464 10s two seasons ago, a decrease this time of £2,600. Notes on the racing and details of results follow. Pio Pio Hurdles General Rose was the only defection from the opening event, and the first day’s winner, Star of the East, and Stormy had an interesting duel for favouritism, and they wound up carrying £228 and £217, respectively, with a drop to £l3B on Lady Spalpeen. The eventual winner. Ramblin’ Rid, was neglected, the amount invested on him being only £2O 10s. Stormy nearly crashed at the first fence and then ran in the rear throughout, and Ah Wera was almost down at the second obstacle. Tinopono was the first over the initial obstacle from Hangawera and Town Hall, and with part of the journey covered the order was Tinopono, Highflown, Terrapeen, Star of the East, Abbot’s Beliglit and Arcbeen. Passing the stands Ilighflown held a small advantage over Tinopono, with Star of the East, Terrapeen, Hangawera and Lady Spalpeen following. Bown the back Star of the East had taken up the running, being attended by Hangawera, Tinopono. Lady Spalpeen and Ramblin’ Kid. The last-named made a fast run crossing the top and was actually the first into the straight from Star of the East, Lady Spalpeen, ITighllown and Tinopono. Ramblin’ Kid was always doing it nicely in the run home and he came on to win by half a dozen lengths from the consistent Lady Spalpeen, who finished a couple of lengths in advance of the favourite. Tinopono was fourth, and the next over the line were Highflown, Master Arch and Abbot’s Belight. Trial Handicap There were two mild surprises in the' maiden class event. Monetize £254 was a good favourite, others to come in for fair support being Rose Arch £l6l and Te Taone £143. Ossian and Sulla began brilliantly, but when they had settled down Cloud Bank held command from Upoko, Flying Tresses, Te Taone, Rose Arch and Sulla. Cloud Bank was still the pilot crossing the top, his nearest attendants being Te Taone, Flying Tresses, Rose Arch, Upoko arid Archeval. Cloud Bank was the first to turn for home, followed by Te Taone, Archeval, Rose Arch and Sulla. The last named finished much more generously than hitherto and beat the outsider Archeval by half a length. A head away was Archileen, who came from well back, and she was followed in order by Te Taone, Prince Val, Swiftlight, Upoko, Cloud Bank and Monetize. The last named was never travelling like a winner at any stage. The second horse had only £27 invested on him and paid nearly double figures for his dividend. He is owned by the president of the club, Mr. H. Rathery, who also races Glendowie. Waitomo Handicap Papatu was withdrawn from the principal event, leaving eight runners, of whom most money was forthcoming for Schorr £333, and Siaosi £306, with good drops to Mervette £lB9 and King Smock £167. Passing the stands The Thorn, Tinokoa, Te luoroke, King Smock, Mervette, Schorr, Siaosi and Bright Bay was the order, but entering the back stretch Tinokoa was in the van just in front of The Thorn, this pair being out five length in front of Te Koroke, King Smock, Mervette and Siaosi, who were in close order. Tinokoa was still in charge crossing the top from The Thorn, King Smock, Te Koroke, and Mervette, the lastnamed making a forward move here. Tinokoa led into the home stretch from The Thorn, Xing Smock, and Mervette. At the bottom of the straight Mervette and King Smock were in the van, the former drawing away, to win by a length from King Smock, with a length and a-lialf back to The Thorn. Siaosi was fourth, and then came Te Koroke and Tinokoa. The last named faded badly over the last bit. Hack Cup Brampton was the only withdrawal from the Maniapoto Hack Cup, and The Lover £4lB was always favourite, while there was only modest support for anything else outside of Leitrim £363, a few friends sticking to Speechless £195 and Glena Bay £l2l. Arch Queen led past the stands and out of the straight from Leitrim, The Lover, Whaka King, Speechless and Glenstar, and down the back Arch Queen

was joined by Leitrim, the pair being clear of Whaka King, Speechless, The Lover and Roman Abbey. Crossing the top Leitrim had forged into the lead, The Lover having run up into second place, with Arch Queen, Speechless and Whaka King next and Star Comet coming fast. The Lover was tli© first to turn for home, attended by Leitrim, Speechless, Arch Queen, W'haka King and Star Comet. In the run to the judge The Rover held Ills own to score by a length and a-half from Speechless, with Star Comet a length away third. Master Roley finished strongly in fourth place, being followed by Arch Queen, Leitrim, Glena. Bay and Roman Abbey. Mairoa Flying

Despite the fact that she had won the big race earlier in the day rather comfortably, Mervette, penalised 71b, was not favourite in a five-horse field for the Mairoa Plying, New Moon with £342 being better backed than the mare, who was entrusted with £298. while Macroom, the third choice, carried £l9B. New Moon began best from Mervette, Regent, Tinoiti and Macroom. Along the back Tinoiti was still making play, being attended by New Moon, Regent and Mervette. Crossing the top Tinoiti and New Moon were together, with Mervette going round them, and she was the first to turn for home, and from there went away to win again easily by three

lengths. Macroom was a length and a-hulf away third, with Tinoiti fourth and the favourite last. The ground w*s getting a. good soaking, and the soft irack did not assist New Moon, although it made no difference to the winner. Rangitoto Hack The scratcliings were Bombarder :*nd Brampton, leaving a small field of half a dozen. Valroe £428 was favourite in a fine betting race, there being also good support for Hakanoa £343, and Ripon Abbey £330. Valroe, Ripon Abbey and Archeval were the first to become prominent, but at the end of a furlong Nurjahan was rushed to the front, being attended by Valroe, Archeval, Ripon Abbey, Hakanoa and Kerry Dance. Crossing the top Valroe was again in the van, followed by Nurjahan, Archeval, Ripon Abbey and Hakanoa. Into the straight the order was Valroe, Nurjahan, Archeval, and Ripon Abbey, with Hakanoa coming fast and having to go around the field. Valroe maintained his advantage to the post, but he had to be ridden out to beat Hakanoa, who was very unlucky. A couple of lengths away was Archeval, and then in order were Ripon Abbey, Nurjahan and Kerry Dance. Hangatiki Hack Handicap The defections from the Hangatiki Hack Handicap were Bombarder and Abbey Queen, leaving a field of nine, Sulla being penalised 51b for his win earlier in the day. The best backed were Takutama £455, Oscar £414, and Sulla £2lB. The favourite began briskly and led out from The Jack Jumper, Sulla, Nulli Secundus, Hone Heke, Oscar and Flitter. Approaching the top The Jack Jumper took charge and led across from Sulla, Oscar, Takutama, Hone Heke, and Nulli Secundus, and except that the favourite had taken the lead the positions were the same at the straight entrance. Then Takutama kept going to win by a length from Sulla, with The Jack Jumper a length and a-half back in thind berth. Flitter was fourth, and then came Maurea, Hone Heke and Osca.r. Farewell Handicap Considered unlucky in the sprint the first day, backers made Town Bird a strong first fancy for the final event, while there was good support for Bulolo, and friends for King Peg and Wa.ltzer, the latter being at a nice prico in a nine-horse field. There were three withdrawals. The favourite had every chance, getting away well and making the pace to the home turn, pursued by Takutama. (penalised 71b for his win in the-preceding race), King Peg and Waltzer. The last-named, revelling in the soft track, buried the leaders for pace in the straight and went on to win easily by a couple of lengths from Takutama, who is now in good form. Bulolo finished wide out, under the judge’s box, a length and a-lialf away third, and was perhaps a bit unlucky. King Peg, who was fourth, was having liis first race for some time, and should soon be holding his own. Following are the results: PIO PIO HACK HURDLES Of £120; 1 mile 5 furlongs 11—RAMBLIN’ KID (J.
