REFLECTIONS FROM TAMAKI
The Tamaki Yacht Club generally seems to be favoured with .brilliant weather for its racing events. Conditions on Saturday were, however, a little too brilliant if anything. The programme, which was timed to start at 2.40 p.m., did-not get under way until 55 minutes later. The absence of an adequate breeze early in the afternoon prevented several intending contenders from making Kohimarama Wharf, the starting place, until well after three. In consequence the officials, Mr. W. A. Wilkinson, commodore of the club, and Captain H. C. Burns, rightly decided that all boats should go once round the course only, instead of twice as originally proposed. The decision met with the satisfaction of most crew’s, and even those who demurred later saw the wisdom of the action. Thus the boats w r ere able to get away to their bases in good time and while there was still a breeze to drive them home against an ebbing tide. The racing handicaps were, of course, halved for the halved course. The course, a triangular one from the start off, the wharf, to the Bastion, thence round a mark near the Bean Rock light, thence to mark off St. Heliers, thence to Kohi, is probably one of the best on the harbour. For its entire distance it is in full view of spectators. The large crowd on Saturday followed with interest the progress of events. There was nothing outstanding about the racing. For the most part the fields w*ere meagre, only 20 yachts and three outboards putting in an appearance. It is reported by boats taking part in the combined race for 14-footers that the boat which eventually won badly fouled the T boat Kismet, at the Bastion mark. Doubtless this will be looked into by the officials.
