PEASANTS ON HIGH HEELS

ANOMALY IN BRITTANY AUCKLAND DOCTOR’S TOUR Brittany peasants, in their quaint, old-world costumes, beneath which peeped—high-heeled shoes! This curious anomaly was observed in the South of France by Hr. M. Knight, of Auckland, who returned on the Ulimaroa to-day after a seven months’ trip to England and the Continent. “I undertook the tour partly for health .reasons,” she told The Sun this morning, “but attended a big camp of Girl Guide officers while in England. "I found the Province of Brittany in the South of France a delightful spot, untouched by the years, save for the curious taste of the natives in regard to their footwear. It seemed strangely incongruous to see those pretty peasant costumes worn with modern high-heeled shoes, and I deplored the introduction of the fashion.* The Girl Guide movement, said Hr. Knight, thrived exceedingly in England, and there was every indication of further growth. The organisation was a fitting companion to the Boy Scout movement and mutual advantages were shared. The camp was at toxiease, the great Guide centre, where 300 commissioners took a. course of training that lasted a week. . Hr. Knight was present as Provincial Commissioner for Auckland, and was among those entertained by Princess Alary at Chesterfield House
