TENNIS AFFAIRS

PROFIT FROM VISITORS STAND TO BE COVERED The stand at Stanley Street courts is to have a permanent ! covering. The Auckland Lawn Tennis Association came to that decision last evening, when Mr. T. E. Hickson presided. The president reported that a committee had been authorised to go ahead with a covering to cost £250. An estimate for the work amounted to £309. The meeting decided to cover in the stand to serve two courts, the money to come out of the art union fund. The secretary, Mr. L. AV. Swan, reported that the net receipts from the test match against the British team amounted to £379 for the two days, the first having given £257, and the second £122. The Auckland Association’s 30 per cent, of this would be about £llO. and the net profit should be about £SO. “This is easily a record gate for us,” said the president. “The gross receipts were £4ll. The stand was packed on the first day, and we ran out of reserved seats.” THE LADDERS Mr. A. K. Turner reported that the ladder committee wished to receive entries for senior and junior ladders. Little interest had been taken in the junior ladder so far. Sixteen places would be established in each ladder. The New Zealand Association advised that probably six days would be required for the New Zealand championships to be played in Auckland, beginning on Boxing Day. A match committee, consisting of Messrs. Goldie. Ohlson. Uardie. Griffiths. Chalmers, Bates. Nicholson, and Potter, wa% set up to make arrangements for the Auckland handicaps, which are scheduled to begin on January 31. If the Stanley Street courts are still required for the New Zealand titles, other courts will have to be obtained for the handicaps. Rotorua Club asked for permission to hold its open championship and handicap tournament at Christmas, and the Birkenhead and Northcote Club asked for permission to hold an Easter tourney. Both applications were sent on to the N.Z.L.T.A.
