MRS. PATERSON’S PHOTO

CANDIDATE’S COMPLAINT “We women have had the franchise for a number of years and yet we put up with these soupkitchens. It is high time we women woke up.” In this manner Mrs. Paterson, Independent Labour candidate, prefaced her address to about 100 electors of the Grey Lynn electorate at the corner of Garnet and Old Mill Roads last evening. The sole object of standing, she said, was to wake up the women of the constituency and make them think. A Voice, rather sadly: You will find it a hard job, missus. “There is class distinction everywhere,” she said, “even in The Sun. That paper asked me for my photograph and published it once along with the othSr women candidates, but this eveing they publish the other two candidates again and leave mine out. I ask you, is that fair?” The candidate, however, had overlooked the fact that the two photographs referred to appeared in an advertisement.. “It is all very well this class distinction,” added the candidate, “but remember that you have to be a man before you can be a gentleman or a lady.” (Laughter.) Mrs. Paterson also devoted some time to the high cost of living, a subject that prompted an interjector to remark that it was far too dear at sixpence a glass. He further remarked that he had received three “handles” for nothing that evening. The Candidate: You will pay tor it after the election. (Laughter.) At the conclusion of her address the candidate was accorded a vote of thanks.
